if memory serves me (which i can't promise), pintails are nefarious short grass nesters much different than most other dabblers which prefer taller, denser cover for nesting. pintails often nest a fair piece from water in sparser, less dense habitat, again, much different than the other dabblers such as mallards, gadwall, teal, etc etc.

but either way (same or different nesting habitat), again, say that out loud.

Gator you are 100% correct on that one. That reason is why the numbers have been so low, they are easy prey for predators in the shorter grass, and also tend to be much greaterly influenced by weather changes than other ducks.

mfox, are you really serious?? Last I checked mallards were the most plentiful duck out there as far as numbers go. Hunt pintail a little, they are such graceful birds, I'd probably rather shoot a pintail over a mallard, and that's coming from someone who kills quite a few ducks every year and maybe one of wich will be a mallard.

Only bird we could count on to get a limit on. Had a buddy that had never killed one so I told him to come with us. They were like black birds pitching in from all directions.

I can't remember a day that went by that when we had birds that we did ot kill a pintail or at least miss a few. On several occasions we had a blind limit of pintails before we had one person limit of mallards.
I know ya'll are going to bust my chops about the terminology "blind limit" but you know what I am trying to say.

I like the 1/60 where it is.

Imangine this, What would the mallard numbers do if they cut them back also, instead of a 4/60 make it a 3/60 with only one hen???????? Or even better in my book 3/60 and a hen counts as two.

Maybe the one bird limit should be put in place for Mallards we'd have a decrease in hunters and after a couple of years an increase in birds.

No problem here..i'll shoot the piss outa them gads and smilin mallards!
