3 1/2's in 3" gun

This is correct doc. I have a rem 1100 2 3/4 in that has been boared by a gunsmith to shoot 3in with the barrel cut off to 28in. It clearly says 2 3/4 in on the barrel and the gunsmith told me that in the long run it is not good for the gun. I have hunted with it now for 10+ years with no problems. It has killed many a duck.

It "can" be done IF you have a professional gunsmith ream out the chamber to a longer length, and lengthen the forcing cone. Right now, every time you shoot the longer shell, the tip is extending slightly into the forcing cone, and your shot is bridging trying to cram down into the running bore in a shorter space than the design of the gun, and the chamber pressure is spiking. Maybe not enough to blow the gun, or maybe not enough to blow it THIS time. Who do you think knows more about that gun, your homie, or the designers and engineers at Ruger? Why not send them an email and see what THEY say? :wink:

I am not a gun designer, just a guy who has represented multiple gun companies when Bubba blows one up with his new Ninja handload, then wants to sue somebody. I got some really neat pictures somewhere that would probably convince you NOT to do what you are doing.

Have you tried 10 ga. shells in it yet? Hooo boy, its a little trouble at first, but cramming it in with a screwdriver will do the trick and what a blast! :lol:

Ruger Red Label barrel may be backbored and the shell may fit. If you wanted to shoot 3.5 you should have bought 3.5

Just got off the phone with Ruger. They said that it is perfectly fine to shoot the 3 1/2's. Even says so in the owner's manual. Doesn't mean I'll do it anymore, but I won't be shopping for a new barrel now. Y'all scared me and made me feel stupid! Oh well, probably good for me.

Ok just out of curosity what does it say on the Barrell?? If it said only 2 3/4 and 3" why in the world would Ruger say it is OK.. My guess is they must have bored it out to handle the 3 1/2..

The only stamp on the gun is near the chambers and says ' 3" chambers'
Nothing more, nothing less.

Then I would keep it to that.. Unless you got someone very knowledable from Ruger and not just the receptionist at the front desk.. :shock:

I talked to the shotgun service and repair center and the lady I talked to gave me that answer and then double checked with two others who all agreed. Not to mention that she said it is in the owner's manual (which I plan to varify for myself)

Must have been bored for 3.5", but not proof tested. There is SOME reason that they stamped the barrel the way they did. I have seen some "european" O/U's go caploey doing stuff like that....

They made the red label before the 3.5's not gonna hurt a thing however till you have it bored it may affect your shot pattern. Gun can take it if your shoulder can!

I checked the owner's manual and can't find where it says it is ok. I'm calling them back in the morning.

As far as shooting 3 1/2's out of an 1100 goes, I do know that, even if it was safe, an automatic chambered for 3" won't eject 3 1/2's.

Let's not start trying it in every gun we've got just because one moron (me) got away with it so far.
