assuming the vent lines for the carb are clear and the intake is clear the best way I have found to cure the cold weather blues of a atv is to turn the air/fuel mixture screw on the bottom of the carb out a half of a turn. this is on a honda, but I believe its the same for the big bears. by turning the screw out a half turn this richins the idle to 1/8 or so throttle, so you dont have to use the choke.

It is definately choke related.
It won't be the breather tube because if it was clogged, it would always run badly and not just on startup. If it was a problem with the carb, it would also be a problem not just on startup(in one particular RPM range, which would self-diagnose which jet was the problem).
