Large/small? Classic/regular?

How well does the s30v hold an edge when cleaning deer, and how hard is it to sharpen?

I have the small classic and love it. the s30v holds an edge remarkably well when skinning a deer and is very easy to sharpen. I havent found a better knife to use, but as you know, it is a bit of an investment. It's not one you buy as an impulse.

Have a kershaw easy open that i carry on me at all times. and now i use a knife given to me by Chocolateseal at the goose hunt to do all my skinning. it is one awesome knife. never had a knife that would hold an edge like this one.

For daily use a SOG flash with half and half serrated/plain.

I will mix in some others too.

As others has said before. Benchmade. I've got a 975 (Emerson) folder that's as tough as just about any fixed blade. I've also got a mini-AFCK that was my everyday knife for the longest. It's about 12 years old and still locks up like new. Both of these have ATS-34 blades. Takes a little longer to put an edge on them but that edge stays. Only downside is ATS-34 will rust.

That being said my father in law gave me a Kershaw Leak a few years ago and it has become a favorite. Holds an edge well. Slimer than the Benchmade. No hard edges to tear up my work pants. Assisted opening is the bomb. One last thing, I'm known as the guy in the office with the big knife. I'd always have my knife out for someting or other and I'd get these looks from people like I just whipped out a machete. The blade on the Kershaw is damn near 3" long but because the thing is purple most people just comment on the color. Even the liberal females, "Ohhh that's pretty." If you have to work around "sensitive" persons you might want to look into the Kershaw.

I've been stuck in a rut lately with Dozier knives (not that it is a bad rut to be in) and some of these look pretty good.

GC, do you have a Lone Wolf Paul, or some other model? I've been looking at the Paul's and also the Scott Cook/Chris Reeve knives for my next acquisition.

Yes. The Lone Wolf Paul's are very nice, if you like that kind of lock. I think it is pretty neat. You can get some nice Pauls from A.G. Russel, too. I also have a big D2 folder from Lone Wolf I keep in the truck in case Katrina anarchy breaks out again. I can use it for a spear or a machette in case of sabertooth tiger attacks.

GC have you had any problems with the lock up on the Pauls?

I have a couple of Dozier folders that have the liner lock. Very nice, and also the D2 holds an edge for a long time, but a little tough to get back to the lazer sharp edge from the factory.
