chasing merriam's turkey

Gator, i checked to see if the place that we went to had a website but they don't. All that i can remember is that the name of the outfitter is The Brink's Outfit out of Union Center, SD. You want to talk about being surprised, when we pulled up the first afternoon, there was 4 longbeards strutting in the yard with 10 hens. Each night we spent the night, at least one or more turkeys roosted in the trees in the yard of the Lodge. You could have shot them out of the trees as you walked out the door.

I'll second what Buckman said. The merriams are pretty dumb. Nothing like hunting an eastern. If your trying to get a grand slam, I'd go for your Osceola in Florida first, eastern second, then get your rio or merriams as they are both pretty easy. Are you also trying to get a Gould's and Ocellated?

buckwheat, i'd love to get on both of those (particularly the gould's) but not until the big 4 take a hit......for whatever reason, i'm not at all fired up about the oscellated. i think it's the way i've seen the hunting of those birds presented, which admittedly, may or may not be accurate.

Ifin you don't get to make it for the merriams you can always catch up with me and chunk. We are headind to Missouri the Sat. before opening day.

I agree with you on the ocellated. It's expensive to go shoot one and everyone that I have spoken with says that it's not the most exciting hunt. I can't get into paying that kind of money to go shoot a turkey out of a tree. I've got his # at home. I'll post back up later.

dude, last time i was around both of you...........at once.................i got put in jail :lol:

beside, i got easterns hangin off my barrel on my dad's place, why in the world would i wanna go kill myself on those hills where ya'll hunt up there :lol:

i gotta wife and kids to be worried bout man.............................well, i got 2 dogs that would miss the fire outta me :lol:

buckwheat of the "God forsaken hills"??? DANG, you get around

Must be a different buckwheat. Don't know nothin' about the "God forsaken hills". Buckwheat is the name of my fat old hound. (13 year old black lab) I probably do know a few of you folks though. I went to State from 95-99.

I have received some pretty good responses lately from around the country on the BassPro Trade a Hunt forum. I have not put anything together yet, but have definitely gotten some good hits. I am trying to work out a trade for an Osceola, but I am trying to take 2 people with me and I can't find anyone with enough room for three. May just have to drop someone.

Gator, you should know man there is NO comparison with the birds we got here and those big booty 25 pound easterns in Missouri, plus I don't think the jails are as bad there as they are in Lawrence county. Man, I haven't thought about that night in a while, that was wild!!!!!!! And your pops was pissed!

Know why the indians out there got so many turkeys? Cause they drink so much and stay so looped that they can't stay sober enough to hunt them. No BS. The state even had to STRAIGHTEN OUT one of there main roads going to the next county b/c it was too curvy and too hilly and too many native americans were getting killed going to and from the bars!! True story... :roll:

Your right about all of the drinking. At just about every three way intersection you will see a pile of wrecked cars where some drucks thought the road kept going straight. The place is a bit like a third world country, but there are a pile of turkey. I met Bam, didn't hunt with him at all. Ron is quite the interesting fellow. While a bit odd, he is damn good at what he does. I've booked an elk hunt with him for Sept. 2008 just outside of Yellowstone.
