Go to the Carlson Calls website and order the dvd Duck Calling A to Z. It comes with a nifty little computer program that shows you tounge positions and why calls yodel or squeak out. There really are no shortcuts. I am still learning every day. Hope to have it down when I hit 70.

Max Load, I have to disagree. I have a DR and a SR, but use the DR just as much and it is just as versatile. The SR may have more volume, but that is not a reed issue, but an insert issue. The DR is great for beginners. It is more forgiving, easier to blow and helps build confidence. Once they can blow a DR properly, then move on to the SR. That has worked great for me and friends that I have helped get into the sport.

Fair enough sky, I can see your point. We could talk about this subject till the ducks come down as you know. I blew a DR for about a month and the guy who taught me to call made me trade him my $20 DR polycarbon call for a $100 SR Echo. He said he wouldn't let me blow it when I hunted with him if I didn't. So I guess my opinion is formed by someone other than me that I was taught by. I do have to mention however that his name was brought up several times a while back on this site as being the best "meat caller" in MS. You may be or someone else on here may also be someone who was mentioned as one of the top callers and may also blow a double reed. All I can say is what I have been taught. Also, someone advised Wandy earlier to go listen to ducks and not try and copy a caller. I agree with this for the most part. However, I sound like a caller who sounds like a duck. My point is find someone who can truly blow a duck call and sit with them and listen. Truly listen. Not just to the sound coming out of the call but to the lack of grunting they make when they blow it. In what order they blow the various calls and in which situation. He and I joke alot when we are hunting about guys who are trying to blow a single quack call to simulate a lone hen but thier notes are too close together. This is a distress call to a mallard. Anyway, as everyone on here does, I love this stufff and think it is great that Wandy is so proactive learning about the sport that WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE!

I will probably open a can of worms, but here goes. Wandy if you are just learning, try and learn on a single reed call. They are a little harder to blow but offer a few benefits that a double reed can't. 1) They are less prone to stick, 2) You can make one call sound like different ducks by varying the pitch. (Double reeds sound like the same duck everytime you blow them). I personally prefer an "Echo" timber call but there are alot of good calls out there.

Good points ML, and even though double reeds are easier to blow, if you are serious about learning to call, you might as well learn on a single reed, so you don't have to start over again when you decide to switch.

Max, right on. I can talk about calling all day.....I truly enjoy that aspect of duck/turkey hunting. And I only wish I could be mentioned as one of the top meat callers in the area as I have a LONG way to go before I am anywhere near an accomplished caller. I started calling a little over 4 years ago and I shared the path I took and the path I recommend to friends. I blow duck calls everyday, so I practice (which is key) a lot to try and better myself as much as possible. I blow a SR a good bit, but it is hard to beat a 'down n dirty' DR duck call, especially in the timber.......right now, I am using the new Buck Gardner pocket rocket Hercules (DR) and Titan (SR). Both are great calls with plenty of 'hen' packed inside and they will NOT stick. I too am excited to see Wandy asking for help. Good Lord knows we all need it, especially me!

thanks for the help everyone... right now i have a primos phat lady and an echo. the echo was givin to me earlier this season by my friends dad when we went up to belzoni. the echo (double) is a lot easier to blow and sounds better in my opinion but sticks like crap once i blow it for long and it gets wet.
the lady sounds a little to low and raspy and is too loud so i guess i would use that when im hunting in bean and rice fields. ive heard of tuning a call but im not gonna screw with um cause i would just mess up the calls...

through it away, I have never liked any of Primos duck calls. That is just my .02 cents though I have an echo timber(msducks call) and I love it but you might can get it tuned and it help out

At your age, you are going to catch all kinds of heck blowing a call like that because it takes so much air. The Primos Yo Sista timber and Phat Lady open water are good calls, but they take air, alot of air.
