Doc, its not so much about assigning blame as it is explaining the situation to those that simply have no clue about what is going on at UM, and jump to the conclusion that Coach O must not be a very good coach.
At some point, after hearing all the revisionist history about how great Cut was, and how stupid UM was to fire him, it just gets to the point that a response with the hard facts is necessary. If Cut was such a great head coach at UM, why hasn't some other school hired him as its head coach? If he was such a great QB coach, why did not he not have a replacement of even average ability ready after Eli graduated? Why did he NEVER gain a handle on the defense while at UM? ---essentially squandering a great opportunity for a title or two while we had the best QB in college football with Eli? We underachieved EVERY year Cut was at UM. Our SEC record under Cut was below .500. How many other SEC schools would accept those types of results after 6 years?
Could Coach O have done a better job coaching to-date at UM? Absolutely. He is a new head coach and has made mistakes. But, even if he had coached perfectly, had started with the perfect, harmonious staff, and gotten the most out of what we had when he was hired and currently have after just 1 1/2 years on the job, we would still just be a team stuggling to achieve bowl eligibility.
It is time to build for something better --even if it means essentially starting over, which it appears we are. 35 + years and no football titles at UM. Enough said. UM has embarked on a different approach ---focus on recruiting the best football players we can get, transform UM from a traditional "finesse" team into a power football team that plays great defense, and instill a winning attitude. That mission is going to take a little while. I am willing to wait and be patient to allow Coach O and his new staff at least 2-3 more years to turn things around.
