I have had quite a few pop up on me...I would suggest using mobile home tie down anchors down in the hole the pit is in...at least one on each corner....You can rent a machine to screw them in the ground and if you do more than one pit..Its worth it !!

Ive had pits in for 2 years now with no pop ups...4 tie down anchors at depth of bottom of pit one on each corner...I use chain to connect the tie down anchors to the angle iron framework that extends out from the pit at the base....I have steel arkansas style pits for what its worth...

Good luck..It does make a difference...not only in getting the ducks close, but also in comfort...Pick your spot carefully..!!

Mallardbuster - go with a layout boat or a coffin blind for at least a full season on a lease that you know you'll have for more than a few years. Once those pits are in, they are a bitch to move. Someone recommended the old dumpsters. They are great but you'll need to modify them and have 12" to 18" flanges welded no higher than half way up the sides running parallel to the ground. These should run the length of the two longest sides. When burrying them - pack dirt below the flange and above - extremely tight. I would rent a wacker packer. Leave 12" above the previous seasons water mark - you'll have to mark it with a stick before the end of the first season. Have some tracks welded out of angle iron so they sit in a V and extend about 10 inches out of either side of the blind. I would use an old solid door for the top and place 4 fixed casters from home depot on the door about 2.5 feet apart (1.25 feet from center on either side). This will allow the top to roll either direction and you'll have plenty of room to shoot either way. It's a lot of work. Another thing - PIT rules are extremely important. Call a zone for each gun and NO ONE and I mean NO ONE ever shoots sitting down. If you take a kid - let him shoot alone and sit out the big volley. They tend to be below the line of fire and it's just plain dangerous.

I would stick with the layout boats. They'll keep you dry in deeper fields and you can always move them to the ducks.
