I hope these sports teams make it around metro Jackson, but history has not been good to pro sports in Jackson.

Xpress,

Thanks for all of the info. I had read there were doubts on his silent partners or himself [Hattiesburg guy] to come up with the money and that was why the city councilmen of Jackson were reluctant on making the deal with him. I had not heard about him buying the land out at the airport.

Since the summer months have gotten here the M-Braves have had some decent crowds even during the week. We went last Tuesday and there were 3900+ there. Yea, it needs to be 4900+, but the crowd looked good even when the teams is not doing well. You probably know, but a lot folks don't follow minor league ball, that in the minors you are not going to get the year end and year out great teams like in the pro's. If a guy is producing on the mound or at the plate, he is moving up. When this happens it takes away from the entire team, such as the nine players that moved up last year for the M-Braves, so you have to go to minor league games for the pureness of the game. I enjoy baseball, especially high school, college, and amateur ball, so minor league games are right up my alley.

If this guy can really get the AFL2 team and hockey here, I will support them! I enjoy watching AFL on TV. To me it is like watching the NFL on speed!

Disotell to build arena in Pearl; Smith-Wills spared for now NEW!

Posted June 30, 2006

Jackson, Miss., has lost one proposed sports arena but now has another one in the planning stages. Developer Greg Disotell on Thursday said he will build a sports arena -- originally planned for the Lakeland Drive site where Smith-Wills Stadium stands -- in nearby Pearl. Meanwhile, Jackson Mayor Frank Melton said later the city has another party interested in building an arena downtown. The arena in Pearl will have seating for up to 12,000 and be home to the Mississippi Headhunters (AF2), a team Disotell owns and will relocate from Biloxi. Disotell says a national chain has committed to building a 150-room hotel adjacent to the arena. The maneuvering would seem to spare Smith-Wills Stadium, the former home of independent and affiliated baseball in Jackson.
