Dutch, it couldn't be done much more openly than it is round here. It's truly amazing, if you spend any time on the highway you see pickup after pickup loaded down with bagged corn.
I was in Meridian one day back before Christmas sitting at a red light, here comes a Chevy p/u with a full feeder in the back, the guy decides to make his turn before it turns red, dumps the whole feeder out in the middle of the intersection, corn went everywhere. I laughed for 30 minutes before I could explain to my wife why it was so funny

Again to me it is all baiting, but the way the law is written it favors unethical hunters with big wallets...

How does the law favor unethical hunters?

I won't use corn for a couple of reasons.

1. It is against the law
2. I can't afford the fine if I got caught..

Unethical Hunters could care less about the first reason and an unethical hunter with a big wallet does not care about the law or the fine and therefore has no reason not to throw out corn..

I heard plenty of people say hey it is only 100.00 bucks I'll throw the corn out.

Greenhead, I was wandering if you could point out where I might find some info on where the insurance companies are pushing the corn bill and increased harvest limits.
Here is what I am certain of:
1. Representative Robinson introduced the bill promoting grain on private land.
2. Representative Hudson is for extending deer season in some counties in southern MS for certain size bucks.
3. Senators Posey & Flowers want you to be able to hunt anterless deer with any weapon on private land.
4. Representative Barnett wants the state to promote hunting by tourists.
5. Representative McBride would like to delete the provision prohibiting nonresidents from killing does.

I have not yet found where George Dale (Commissioner of Insurance for MS) has introduced any bill that would affect our deer population in MS. I also have not received any monthly memos from any insurance companies asking me to support legislation to eliminate deer.
Were you meerly stating your opinion, or do you know where I might find some information supporting your statement?

Aside from the illegality issue, why is it unethical to shoot deer over corn feeders, yet it's ethical to shoot deer over green patches?

Hambone, my point exactly.. Everyone says that hunting over corn is baiting the deer, which is so terrible. IMO there is no difference to hunting over corn or over a green patch..

You either outlaw it all or make it all legal...

And I suppose that there are some that think there is a corporate conspiricy that Insurance Companies roam the land like Johnny Appleseed. Their sole purpose in life, to plant green fields.

Remember the year when they raised the doe limits from 2 to 7 if you did bow, rifle, muzzle, etc? It wasn't because the population was going up and needed some knocking down, it was because the insurance companies were getting nailed with deer claims left and right. If you don't believe State Farm is in with the politicians in Jackson pushing these bills and increased limits over the years, then you are sadly confused. I'm getting this info from one of the big state farm reps in the state of ms if you are interested.

The insurance companies have a major stake in this, and they are pushing this from behind the scenes.

As for you brad russell, I pass up bigger bucks every year than you take.

GH22 you said yall were killing 12-15 bucks a year on your camp? how many acres is your camp.

as for bucks walking right to a feeder to feed, is junk, a TROPHEY buck isnt going to walk up to feeder and start eating corn and let you shoot him. trust me i got evidence. i 1 mile square lease on the river in se kansas. i put up 6 feeders in sept. and a game camera, i got alot i mean alot of pictures of 12-15" 8 and 10 points. but when the rut started. i saw alot of those little deer. and bunch of studs that never showed up on that camera.

if a man is going to set up a feeder and hunt over it, he is going to kill does and little bucks.

as for the deer population, i think the lower the better. we keep our deer popluation to min. by recomendations of the state biologist. on the theory, less deer, more food, deer live longer, grow bigger horns,

500 acres of woods surrounded by 2000 acres of cutover and grown-up sagegrass fields. We've gone from seeing upwards of 10 deer a day to 1 or 2 if you are lucky. Several times this past season I traveled the roads on our lease after a rain to see how many sets of new tracks I could find, saw 1 or 2 sets at the most.

The doe busting in our area by meat hunters has demolished our deer herd as we used to know it. And all the doe busters have finally admitted the past 2 yrs that they messed up big time by doing so after being pushed by increased doe limits, dmap programs, and state biologists calculating our deer herd from his computer at his office. Our guest numbers have hit rock bottom, losing members......it's hurt us big time. There is no way to keep 10 members happy when you are getting 4 or 5 bucks a season, and it's usually dad and myself that are putting most of the deer in the freezer.

As for not being able to get big bucks via corn, look at all the 160-180 class deer taken in Texas. 98% of the hunts we see on tv have the hunter overlooking cenderos......and what's that cendero covered in.....CORN. A deer feeder is a deer feeder, doesn't matter if it's in a feeder or slung out around your stand or in the road or viewing lane.....all serves the same purpose.

Lets compare this to humanites:

One would be a salad bar with year round use, one would be a chocalate candy factory that is put there for a small part of the season only to accomplish one thing.

Is there a difference, you bet your booty it is, cause if it wasn't corn wouldn't be so popular.

Bottom line if you got to lower standards to kill a DEER you aint much of a hunter to start with.

As many deer as I have seen on the side of the roads this year, I am beginnig to think that hunters would be better off to pile up pavement instead of corn. Reckon how that would affect antler mass?
