Hit a nerve didn't I duckter. Oh, by the way, thanks for the history lesson. I bet your an old retired 8th grade history teacher with nothing better to do than sit around on your fat rump and read the DU magazine and then post quotes on this website. Well, from this day forward i will start recording my banded ducks.

Good luck with the rest of the season and i hope you kill another banded duck so you cna help DU raise that recovery # from 5.5% up to 5.75%.

Nope, didn't hit a nerve there ole Shooter. And, nope not an 8th grade history teacher either. A college graduate from the University of Alabama and I do realize that "nationwide" is actually one word. Just not much time to teach you, "grasshopper."

Would prefer to receive replies to the topic which addresses ages of reported banded recoveries.

Got something against DU, then go ahead and post your topic...and I hope all goes well.

FYI - DU does not manage the Banding program.

Shooter.

1. You have to be able to shoot a duck for it to have a chance to be banded.

2. With as small a mind as you appear to have I don't think you would even notice the band to send it in.

3. Crawl back in the hole you came from and keep your smartazz comments to yourself.

Low Returns From 1902 to 2002, more than 63 million birds - largely waterfowl - have been banded in North America. Of these banded birds, 3.5 million (5.5 percent) have been recovered and reported to wildlife officials.

This makes more sense. Except if you put a dollar value with the percentages. Does this mean 94.5 percent of the banding research money went to waste?

I think not. The information gained from that 5.5 % return has been tremendous.

I wonder if the percentage of bands reported varies year to year and corrolates with the number of duck hunters?

Hmmmmmm guess thats why I am a Biologist.

Nutmeg--

Pretty obvious you got a lot of time on your hands. I don't know you and you don't me and this conversation never had anything to do with you and me, it was between me and duckter ( the retired history teacher).

Mind your own little business.

I got a goose band and old timer gave to me he killed in the 60's it had been banded for 16 years when he killed it.

In doing additional research, USFWS began placing the toll-free number on their bands back in the mid 90's which has significantly increased the banding recovery rates. Again, the 5.5% was based over the last 100 years. Recent recovery rates are significantly higher.

With the average life expectancy of snow geese being 22 years, my guess is that their are some "old" bands still flyin' around. At 22 years, ever wonder why they fly out of gun range so much??? 16 year band is cool.

To shooter - you and Nutmeg need to hunt together sometime. Gotta' get back to my History lesson...

Duckter--

i have been doing a little research myself and i have found out that when a duck is banded or a goose for that matter, they are held in a pin for at least 12 years before they are released. This really makes sense since yours was banded in 92 and there was another post where one had been tagged for 14 years and then there was the one with the goose that had been banded for 16 years.
THis means that i disagree with your theory on your duck battleing 13 years of calls, twirlies(?), and all the other creative things. i think your duck had just 1 year of battle.

Good Luck with the rest of your hunting season

Shooter that is the biggest bunch of $#!+ Ive ever heard. I know plenty of people that have killed ducks that were banded within the same year or two. To say that all banded ducks and geese are kept in captivity for 12 years before they are released is ridiculous at best. Whatever research you claim to be doing is extremely erroneous.

You thought like Andy and thought $#!+ was candy until you tasted it and it wasn't so dandy.

In a perfect world, the % of banded birds that are recovered would fall in line with the % of the duck population that is killed by hunters. This percentage will be lower for several reasons. Here are a few...

1. Some aren't reported although compliance has increased since the promotion of the 800# (and since it's on the band).
2. Drakes and hens are banded and make up that %. Some hunters strive to shoot only drakes.
3. A more accurate measure would be to use a 5 year moving window since the 60plus million goes back to the old days "I am not sending this off to anyone".

regarding the initial post: I shot a lesser Canada with a 13 year old band a few seasons ago.

Hit a nerve didn't I. You Alabama boys are sensative. You and Ole Duckter just need to keep in Hunting Alabama.

I didn't say my research was correct, i just said i had been doing a little myself.

Most people don't quote "research" if it's incorrect. It tends to make you sound like a jackass.
