The second weekend we hunted that sh*t-hole-of-a-place. I was so pissed off, not only because I tore my waders rushing to get my 4-wheeler off of the trailer, but at the people lined up to get to the fields. Like the start of a top-fuel drag race. You need a alcohol burning Honda 250R to get a decent spot to hunt. Then, to say the least, you have every Tom, Dick, and Harry skyblasting ducks over your spread from two hundred yards away.
Leave your calls and decoys in the truck and just go stand near some other group of hunters. You'll get the limit everytime.
The Mahanna 500 was completed on Saturday Dec 7, 2005. There were atleast 30 atv's involved and it was a treat. All hunters lined at the gate waiting until that clock hit 5am and the race was on. I love to hunt ducks but was a new experience being in the middle of that. Don't know if it will happen again on a weekend. (at Mahanna) If you go take your fastest atv and get ready to run it to hunt it.
It doesnt matter what place you finish in the race eigther! If you get to the hole first someone is still gonna come sit beside you.. Boy, Talk about resurrecting a topic!!! Somebody had to go WAY back in the archives to find this one!!!
I used to hunt Mahanna before Mahanna was THE place to go. Back then it WAS "THE" place!! BUT, nobody knew about it but a few people. Mahanna is a PRIME example of WHY you DO NOT tell people about your duck holes!!!!

They still gonna make them line up and haul booty at the appointed tim(or ten min. before) so as to have the same feel of the place!timberjack wrote:wonder if it'll still be a circus or if those that were drawn will actually be able to hunt safely??

Mahanna
I hunted Mahanna for years before it was THE PLACE to be. Still couldn't pass up the opening morning novelty the past three seasons. Being on the gravel road at 2:00 and waiting until 5:00. Just to shoot your limit of woodies by 5 minutes after shooting time started. Last year we were fortunate to kill some big ducks. We totaled 32 birds from our group and if the kids had not been tired from staying up all night we probably would have tabbed the 6 man 36 bird limit. Oh by the way we left at 8:30. I didn't get drawn this year. Kinda sucks to know I started duck hunting their 23 years ago before it was Mahanna WMA and now I have to go be on standby with only a chance to hunt. The government screws up again. All they had to do was to go back to no ATV's off the main road and the number of hunters would have decreased rapidly. I've hiked several miles carrying decoys to hunt where the ducks were but most hunters today want walk 100 feet. Oh well I guess I'll hunt my lease opening day.
