1) is it a "round bill" sorta like a wrap around porch? w/ the bill being the porch and your knoggin being the house?

2) does it have a "strap" leading from one side of it to the other, so as to make it all snug to said noggin in even the worst of weather/wind?

3) do the terms "oil finished" or "waxed tin" show up anywhere on the inside tag?

and 4) mud, do you ESPECIALLY like it to keep out the glare from the morn's sunrise outta your eyes????

if you can/did answer YES to any or all of these, yes, mud you're are a topwater by way of the hat.......

I actually have one of the aforementioned hats that the Professor was so tought on. In my "topwater-esque" opinion it is one bad ass lid. I did dispense of the leather chin strap.

I don't think that most topwaters have sense enought to use good stuff like Filson.

If your hat is a Polo or T.Hilfiger verson of the Filson original you might be a topwater

If your hat doesn't smell of gunpowder, salt, sweat and mud then you might be a top water

If your hat is fresh out of the box and has no personal shapeing then you might be a top water.

No chin strap.
Does not say, "Waxed tin" or "oil finish"
It is round.
Only used it in a blind once as it is light brown and stics out like a sore thumb.
It is my cold/foul weather hat. Good in snow I guess.

I think I'll buy one o' these Layout Lanyards and wear it just to let other hunters know........I'm definately not a threat.

Oh yeah.......I'll have a call 'muff' on each call, too......you know......to keep my calls from freezing down here in Mississippi.......and to protect the finish on my injection-molded plastic calls.

'Gulfcoast'.......have you conducted a thorough product review of this vest/reel/lanyard/whatever contraption, yet?

'Gamehog'......we need to get a couple of these things.......but hang, like......thermoses, cameras, toilet paper, GPS, candy bars, couple o' grenades, Q-beams, Preparation H, etc......... ya know.......everytime you take a step, something either swings-up and hits you in the ear.....or goes down around your knees like a yo-yo, then comes back up and smacks you in the chin? I have an image of Don Knotts (aka Barney Fife) wearing something like that.

It probably wouldn't work .........I'd never be able to keep a straight face.

Im trying to figger out why they have floating call laynards. Ive seen some really crazy stuff, but Ive never seen anyone drop their calls in the drink. Seen a couple tossed, but never accidently dropped. Is there something Im missing? travis

I've seen calls get knocked off the seat of a boat into the water by the dog before, would've helped in that situation, kinda like the floating gun case. I bought one when they first came out, came in handy one day when I took the big plunge, when I came up the calls were floating.

Nice thread- ol' topwater (dsm) is sure bein quiet, must have realized that his camo life jacket was the reason everyone was laughin at him.

Topwaters dont scout by actually getting out of the truck. Sometimes "hunting" requires one to actually walk out into the woods and weeds and mud and water in search of ducks, or duck sign, when you are not actually hunting.

Though driving to the blind in a fourwheeler and never having to walk is good hunting if you can get it, Topwaters never trudge long distances in waders, carrying a bag of decoys over long distances.

Topwaters are not confident in their ability to properly set out decoys and call ducks, therefore they always hunt with spinners. Spinners is the number one indicator a Topwater has. Research probably indicates the early spinner threads is where the Topwater term originated.
