i read somewhere that orthincologists or whatever in the hell they are called (bird experts) say that there is no difference in a pigeon and a dove that biologically they are the same bird. anyone else ever heard of that?

Pigeon Shoot Ring?

Delta -

Watch out for what you wish for regarding PETA.

At one time, the Grand American Flyer Championship was held near my home at a place called Holfords Gun Club in Canton, IL. It was a pretty big affair with names such as Doug Fuller, AJ "Smoker" Smith and the like showing up for it. Well, The PETA folks out of Chicago got wind of it and ended up shutting it down about 7 years ago.

As I recall, Holfords rings each had nine traps. Only 5 of these would be released during a race. This way when you got down to one bird, you still wouldn't know which trap would release a bird. The closest position was 25 yards, but most races started at 27. Closest point of the ring (a 2' high chain link fence) to any trap was 15 yards. 2 shots per bird were allowed.

FYI for those that may be shooting a race - If you knock a bird down, make sure and groundswat it again. I saw a calcutta where the first bird was knocked down - shot once and then again before it hit the ground. Then, about the time the 4th bird was released, it got up and landed on the ring fence. Before a bird boy could get to it after the race was finished, it fell dead outside the ring and cost the shooter and his owner/sponsor about $30G.

About the only thing tougher than this type of shootin is when they use a columbaire. He will pull tail/wing feathers in order to get the bird to fly even more erratic.

It sure sounds like a lot of fun. I will be doing the shoots for me and a friend or 2. I wish peta would come down on my property and piss me off. They have not heard how pleasant of a place the Tunica county jail is. I bet those big bucks that are locked up would be well entertained by some sweet peta folks being in the same jail cell. Even if they got the local media to cover their quest, it wouldn't come out for a week later.
I just don't like it when other people try to force their views on me or other people.

I shoot with Doug Fuller in the Open. he was a good shot, but his young kids were outstanding.
