He told us he was and gave us every indication it was going to happen right up until we needed the signature on the dotted line. We are looking for farmers up your way that may be interested in the program. Send them my way if you come across any.

I'm assuming you are talking about the Hinds County field. If so, the permit cost is $55.00 and the field is 72 acres. If not, let me know the specific field, and I will share all I know with you.

I went and looked at the Kemper field, has potential and good set-up. Needs some more field work I'd say.

So, where can a fellow buy a permit after the Expo? Seems to be a good place to go later in the season. Daily draw? Secret combo on the gate? How's it gonna work?

Checked out the Simpson County field this Fri.,AM. Great potential; ain't nothing cut yet. Gonna be "harvested corn". Definetly plenty of room for 80 hunters. Might figure some good spots by the tree openings/ hills but gonna be awhile before they cut it. There is a nice branch in the bottom to cool the pooch. The corn stalks are still green. Gonna have to dry out more to cut it. Somthin about the corn moisture 21% to cut...Saw small sunflower patch that was already starting to blacken but it's small right by the road. Didn't see the millet anywhere. Gonna have to wait and see before I commit. Hope more interest is generated 'cause when it gets "right" might need a lotta shooters to keep'em movin. Tried to find the farmer but couldn't hang long. There's a big patch of d'maters that are ripe and hanging; could make an 18 wheeler load of salsa and canned maters for sure! Gonna waste soon. Anybody check out the Jones county field? If I do it these 2 are closest for me. The people at the District offices just don't have the details much on the fields. Might need to run an add in the newspapers. Need to make this program work, for the future, I think! SB seems to be the brain child and puttin lotta effort in it. Hope he's still got time for home bizzness though. Thanks!


Incidently, GHG/Mack's has got somethin new, but it's on backorder! 10 bucks/dozen (not for the doves but for the "field"/ducks and gooses! )

I live right down the road from the Simpson County field. The owners of the fruit stand across the road own the field. They always cut it around the end of August (guess they'll have to do the same this year to make opening weekend). Not trying to run off any of you potentials from going, but there never has been many birds in that field after they cut. There are several people that have fields in that area, and my guess is they pull most of the birds that would come into that field. Plus, the owner has a huge amount of land planted in corn, and it is all right in that area, so I'm sure that spreads'em out. It sure is a great looking setup though.

SB said in another post that the Hinds, Simpson, Humphreys fields were sold out. I passed on the Simpson till some birds/cutting happened. Can't believe it sold out so fast. Best thing for some, maybe. Them chimmney sweeps gonna catch heck.... Jones County field is millet and might still have openings. It ain't cut yet either... Wonder how they gonna do the millet? Cut it for silage, bale it, or just bushhog it? Tough deal/gamble on the birds being anywhere, anytime.

Kudos to MDWFP and their staff that made these state sponsored fields a reality, helluva great idea! Great job SB!

Saw some corn getting cut in Vance last week; corn in Isola at my old house getting cut today.

The birds will scatter a bit. Early beans and milo won't be far behind.

Well, I went ahead and bought a ticket to the show in Kemper. Lucky # 82 was my pick, there are only about 20 spots left so #82 was the best of the worst. I'm gambling there will be some action later in the season, we'll see.

You only have to hunt the designated spot the fist two hunts then it's a normal public hunting work-it-out-with-your-neighbor deal.

Anybody else in on this?
