Hunt witha retriever that is well trained and done yourself, and you will have more enjoyment in the blind than you can imagine shooting ducks. I can't go hunting anymore wihtout my dog, it's just not right without her in the blind with me.
Secondly, always keep someting in the blind/boat for contact and saftey. i.e. cell phone or VHF radio. If you do keep this in the boat, keep it in a ziploc bag or waterproof bag to keep it working it you go in the drink. Had a very scary deal happen last year with a good freind of mine, if he would have followed those rules, would have been able to call someone. If I woulnd't have been there, he would be six feet under right now, all because his cell phone had fish swimming in it after he went in and sunk his boats. Accidents ALWAYS happen at the worst or most unexpected times.
Third, NEVER run a boat in the dark without running lights, they are there and required by law for a reason.

I've spent a lot of days over the past 3 years, watching blank skies.

I've learned not to expect much and you won't be dissappointed.

Other than that, I just sit there and drum-up ways to screw with other hunters..........without them knowing it.

A whole lot, but what immediately comes to mind is that you can pretty much figure out almost anything by quiet observation with your mouth shut.

I learn so much everytime. I learned all this just last week in the woods:

Sunflowers planted next to rice, get's a little airplane fertilizer.

Wally sunflower seeds look pretty good so far.

A water moccasin can jump the entire length of it's body.

Two people can get off the 4 wheeler and push it through deep deep mud by thumbing the gas.

Some logs you really can't drive a truck over.

Always bust a beaver dam where the beaver channel is.

Always add 24d to roundup.

Always clean the 24d tainted herbicide tank real good before giving back to your dad who farms cotton.

When you run over your moms flower garden border in the dark leaving at 4 in the morning to go work in your duck woods, stop and fix it first.

Take 2 aspirin before working like a dog in the swamps in the summer heat.

Always take insect repellant.

Poison Ivy can get inside hip boots.

coffee and smokes are the equal to any laxative on the market..

I'm just happy to have the chance to go. We have it absolutely made here in the US of A. We're damn lucky that we have the time, money and habitat to duck hunt (or whatever other form of outdoor recreation you choose). The great bulk of the world's population will never have such an opportunity.

Screwing with other hunters is a close second ...

When "attempting" to put the boat in after a long night...Put the plug in before you back in the boat...Then once the boat is removed and drained..before you back it in the 2nd time..put the damned plug in!!

Zip lock smokes, lighter, phone, wallet etc...That will cost ya!!

Push pole all the way AROUND the boat before getting out....

For those of us who DIDN't push pole all the way around the boat..BRING EXTRA DRY CLOTHES!!!

Always tell someone where your going..they may need to come look for you later..THANK GOODNESS

That taking my 10 y/o daughter duck hunting or just hunting/fishing can be more entertaining than talking about how DU feeds the ducks up North!

Listening and watching my 10 y/o go through ALL of the Cabelas/Macks/WoodsNWater mag's listing everything she THINKS she needs....hmm sounds kinda familiar??

Tourists can occasionally serve a purpose.......they can be highly entertaining and help salvage what would otherwise have been a 'slow' day.

I don't want to hurt anyone.......there's enough 'danger' in duck hunting, as it is.

Now, if they get high-centered on a stump because someone moved their reflectors and diverted'em thru a near-by stump field on opening morning (in the fog) ......I don't see any 'real' harm in that.

I started hunting with my grandfather at the age of 5 and before I could even go he made sure I knew just how fortunate I was being able to be in the woods. Take time to appreciate the oppotunity and not sulk over a bad day.

When you hear "GOD HELP US...THERE ARE 3 MEN IN THE WATER!!!!" at 4 am in the morning, try to assist immediately.

Yeah....that's my favorite, too. 'Was scouting a couple of days before the season, one year.......and found these 2 big lollie-pop reflectors marking 2 points (or fingers) of land about 60yds apart.........one red, and one white. I just pulled'em up and moved them over about 60 yds and kept them in the same order (white on right/red on left).

It was real foggy on opening day and reflectors don't do any good until you're right on top of them, ya know. Imagine how disoriented they were, compounded by the fact that they were 60 yds from where they wanted to be, and nothing looks 'right'.....everything looks the same. "But here's the white one, over here"......Man, we heard'em motoring around back there for what seemed like an hour or more.

GREAT FUN!! We counted 14 stumps ....... BWAAAAHAHAHAhahaha!!!!
