Divers Stop Search for Teen

Divers will no longer be searching for the Madison teen missing since a Sunday boating accident.

Madison county sheriff Toby Trowbridge believes the divers have done all they can to find Lanie Kealhofer. Divers were pulled from the water just before 5:00pm Tuesday, as thunderstorms approached Lake Caroline.

Four teams of more than 15 divers each have been rotating every 30 minutes since Monday morning. They've covered an area the size of two football fields -where they believe Lanie's body rests. Sheriff Trowbridge says all they can do now is wait for the body to rise to the surface of the lake.

When Lanie was thrown from the boat Sunday, 17 year-old Rachel Blacklage also fell over board. Authorities believe she came in contact with a propeller, severing her leg below the knee. She is still recovering at UMC.

Friends, Family Remember Kealhofer

By Mari Payton
mari@wlbt.net

After four days of searching for Lanie Kealhofer, friends and family now have some closure. On Wednesday night they gathered along Lake Caroline to reflect on the young woman who touched their lives in so many ways.

Jordan Wyan, a 10th grade classmate said, "We went to cheerleading camp and had the best time, she'd make us laugh when we were tired, she'd just keep us all going."

A memorial in honor of Lanie was held Wednesday night. Many of Lanie's classmates from Madison Central High School and her church gathered along the lake, where Lanie lost her life.

Blair Wohlgemuth, a friend from Lanie's church said, "I love her, I love everyone that's here at this event, it's nice that friendly faces show up."

Lanie had many passions. She was involved in drama, performing in productions of Grease and Alice In Wonderland . Acting is what bonded her to Rachel Blackledge, who's still recovering at UMC from having her leg cutoff in the same accident.

Family said they'll remember Lanie's smile and.... "That beautiful, beautiful red hair and the way she would light up a room with her presence," said her cousin John Hinson.

Lanie's relatives said she was the rock in the family. The one person they all looked up to. "She inspired others to do good," said Hinson, "we can only hope that our own kids can be as good as Lanie...."

Family said heaven is where their angel, Lanie, belongs.

"Her body was recovered today, but her spirit left Sunday and we take comfort in that," said Hinson.

Lanie's family wanted to thank the hundreds of people who were involved in the search for Lanie. They are especially grateful to the Madison emergency management agency and the sheriff's department. They said their determination and passion will never be forgotten.
