aggression
Hey teul, I know the feeling. Although Reagan has never been aggressive at heel (of course, I don't keep him out around strangers w/out an eye on him at all times), he has given numerous "warning lunges" while in my truck and at the door of the house. He's fine around my friends or people he sees I'm friendly with, but if a stranger comes up, the stranger ain't coming in his house, near his truck or near his dad. Sometimes it's nice (when you are away from home) to have a protective dog and other times it's a pain in the ass (knowing not to let him out around large groups of strangers without some introduction first), but that's the way he is so I have to know when to put him up and when to let him out. He has gotten MUCH better as he's gotten older. Now, he doesn't mind strangers much as long as he's out of my truck. He doesn't like them to put their hands on him if I'm not around, but he's not aggresive towards them unless they are aggressive towards him. Another thing, as you know Joel, I just plain do not get him out of the truck/kennel around other male dogs unless we are hunting or training or he grew up with them. He doesn't like other male dogs, so I don't give him the opportunity to be aggressive towards them.
If it becomes a problem for you, I don't know what to tell you to do. I would think that harsh correction might reinforce the problem. An e-collar might work, but that would involve creating a situation for her to lash out in. You may just have to keep her in the kennel around groups of strange people. However, under no circumstances should she be that aggressive (going for the throat) while at heel. Chessies are peculiar dogs, aggressiveness is built into them, you may have to change the way you handle her around people accordingly.

You got a ticking time bomb. Any dog that goes for the throat in that situation, needs to be put down. Glad you werent distracted tying your shoe or diggin in your ear, and it wasnt a 7 year old kid.
If your not willing to kill this dog, you need to realize this dog NEVER needs to be loose around people, espeically kids. You'll hate yourself forever when this dog maims a kid. travis

get yourself a good lawyer man, cause one day you will need one.....that dogs the reason I dont have a pit bull, just dont know when bad will stike. I suggest getting rid of it, or start a heavy disciplinary program, e-collars, 2x4 what every it takes, dogs are animals made to work and honor man, not bite them, dont matter friend or foe, they aint smart enough to know the UPS man from a burglar, you better fix your problem or be prepared for the consquences, just my two cents

BTW Joel, not to rain on your parade or anything, but the last time I checked Mississippi has a one bite rule. The first bite is free. After the first bite, the owner is on notice of the dog's dangerous propensity. I'm not telling you what to do, just what to think about.

I have one question, What is going to happen when you are not around and she goes for a small child??? I personally am only willing to tolerate it once, after the initail "come to Jesus meeting" if it ever happened the second time my dog would be metting Jesus in person.
I know your thinking that is easy to say when it is not your dog, but I have been there and unfortuantly had to take drastic measures. Depending on the dogs age, attempting to correct it know might only make the problem worse, Be careful. Odds are it is most likely a problem that should have been addressed long before know.
If you are participating in hunt test, becareful. Tolerance for that sorta thing is very low, by both judges and participants.
Tough position your in, I hope I have been helpful. If not I apoligize if I have upset you.

1. I never let her out around any one with out me being there esp. kids. Like I said, she was with kids at Willow Break petting her, throwing the dummy for her, ect. She never had any emotion other than fun and love with them.
2. I am not above giving her a lead injection if I can't correct the problem. And yes, it will be hard to put down a dog that is so well mannered in 90% of all other situations and has more test potential than any dog I have had. I know that is replaceable, but...... it still sucks.
3. All that being said, she is on probation. We are going to work on this with some friends. And if she acts out unprovoked after we work on it, she's worm food. It doesn't look like I have much other choice.
I just don't know what set it off. That is what is bothering me. Was it that he acted subordinate in some way, scared her, hurt her, WHAT? I don't know and probably never will.

My friend YOU HAVE A CHESSIE. Chessies have no rhyme nor reason for attacks. They are more unpredictable than pit bulls or rottweillers ever thought of being and that to me is why they are more dangerous. As you said, your dog has been around kids at functions (willow break) been around you and your family forever, I am assuming with you at other social functions as well, and now, out of the blue WHAM 2 different incidents (SP?) in less than a week....unpredictability.

That has been suggested.
Her "system" is kinda funked up. She had a false pregnancy a couple of several months ago and the hormones that the vet gave me threw her system out of whack. She has skipped her heat this time around which should be now.

If that is the case, I would make a large wager that that has something to do with it. I would take her bacj=k to your vet and explain the problems you are experincing and see if he can change her hormones??? I know my Mother was on some and she could not be lived with. We were about ready to give her the "lead injection"

Man, I don't know how much this will help, but I got a Chocolate female that just had puppies and when she initially got pregnant I inquired about any abortion type techniques b/c I felt she was too young and my wife didn't seperate them while I was out of town. The vet "specifically" told me she did not give those shots b/c they were bad for the dog and most of all they can make the dog attack people b/c of hormonal imbalance they cause. She said she didn't want to be the cause of a good dog having to be put down. SO, I don't know what the vet gave her, but that is a response I got about the hormones shots I was asking about...
I have a female and she does not like anybody beside the kids and wife in our yard she is very very protective of her space. She is a sweet dog who longs to work and be played with by the kids but she will run off the meter and gas man if she is out. I can call her and she will stop right away but if not she scares the crap outta them. I was told they are all testy. Maybe she thinks she is protecting you??

I wouldn't say it's a part of owning a chessie. I have a 2 my female is protective of her area and what's hers is hers. She has never bite anyone and as soon as someone she don't know comes in the backyard. She goes the other way barking. My male is the most happy go lucky dog I've seen. He can careless what your doing or anyone. I seem to think it can be a couple of factors alot having to do with socializing and pedigree. My female was the only for about a year and around me all the time( not a very good pedigree). Not socilized alot with people and dogs. My male loves to be around people and other dogs (one of the best pedigrees you can get). He has never to my knowledege made any type of aggression to anyone. Goosebruce can vouch on this if he knows who I am?

[quote="teul2"]her befor. Plus, I don't like the guy to much (he put the ole cok block on me at the St. Paddies Parade).
Joel your pup might have known that Tommy kept daddy from getting some fo-sho action so wanted to let him know that he had made a mistake.lol
I have seen your dog at just about every get together and never seen her be aggeresive in any way so I would say that the sense of fear could have alot to do with it or could Tommy's wavey hair confuse her for gerry curl
