I don't know if a mound means points or not. I know many had burial offerings but I think a flint workshop near an outcrop from the lithics (flint/chert) source itself is the best. I don't think you will find alot of lithic debris in the mound itself but maybe.
The ancients liked to put the workshop off to one side of the camp. They didn't want sharp flint chips on the floor of their house. Still up on high ground but not the main living site. If you find drills/scrappers/tools then you are on the main site. Think about it... tools are in your garage but your bullets (projectile points) could be found most anywhere the hunting was good. Don't think about just modern water sources. Imagine what the land looked like 9000 years ago... before dams or major drainage of wetlands and the changing of the watersheds. Many good places have no visable water source today but may produce good rocks. That'll be yo honeyhole....
The rock hunting is about learning where to go but also timing. You gotta keep your eye on things and go after every rain if you can. Ain't no different than fishing... the more you go the more you will find... you walk your butt off you will find sites and rocks. Its about know-how, timing, percentages, and a little luck
Benny, that is a great field.. old stuff in there. A harpeth river come out of there that you won't find any better in the country. Wish we were walking that one right now.

LOL! Gator, those huge circles are where the center pivot goes round. It's noticeable to me because I've done alot of flying in the Delta.
Notice the "Y" in the bayou at the top of this pic. Just below the "Y" is a small block of woods surrounded by water. Just east or to the right of the block of woods is the leveled mound (the corner of the "new ground" field touches the circle). Those dark stripes are where the land was cleared and the trees were pushed into windrows and burned. Those stripes stay there forever...I guess much like y'all are describing to me about the darker ground where old encampments once were.

I'm still learning how to read the sign on the aerial maps, only the obvious ones are noticeable to me.
Here's a neat link for mounds:

Don't let this thread die. I've been a looker for a while and decided to sign up after this thread. Next to chasing those ducks and turkeys, my next passion is hunting for them pointed rocks. I hav grown up and lived on our family farm in middle TN on the Harpeth river. Over the years my dad has got up tore up about looking for these damn arrowheads. We have tons of them from around th local area and a bunch from our farm. Also find some when we go fishing on the rivers around here. Back before turkey season when all the rivers were drawn down we found alot of full points, drills, and one knife.Keep the pics coming and I'll try to post some of mine next week.

Any suggestions for rock hunting around Woodville? I have found many Civil War artifacts around my hometown of Tallulah and my uncle found all kinds of rocks around his old farm in Waterproof, Louisiana (north of Ferriday/Natchez).
I would love to start looking around Woodville with all the creeks and fields, but really don't know how to start. Any ideas?

Damn... Woodville, AL (Jackson Co. Alabama) along the Paintrock River is a great place to rock hunt. Change your Woodvilles and you are good to go!

Found one 3 day ago ....riding on the passenger side of a Ranger....looking at how weedy a soon to be planted bean field was and...." Hold up. " Jumped out , walked back, and under the Buttercup , there it was! My Personal best was seeing one riding in a truck, slowly , down a turnrow ands spotting one on the side of a freshly planted and rained on corn row.

Guess no one knows of any rock hunting in south MS huh? Would love to be able to find some artifacts(either Indian or civil war). My uncle used to find all kinds of stuff. He is real big into Indian culture. He had found some actual jaw bones and other bones near some other Indian stuff and took them home. Not too much later, he was having some real bad luck and thought that maybe it was from the artifacts so he went out back, built a mound, and buried the stuff. Instantly his luck changed. Kind of interesting.

I found a femur in the vicinity of Booga bottom one time!!!! in the middle of a rice field.
Mighty peculiar.
Also found an intact hoe or shovel according to one guy. I thought it was a tomahawk! looks just like a ax head. Anybody know about that sort of relic???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Did it look like this?
This is called a pole celt which is a fancy name for an axe. If it is groved you might look for pictures of a 3/4 groved axe for a reference. Post a pic... would love to see it.

So my neighbor comes up to me today and says, "I saw your footprints down there by the bayou and I found a spear point and an arrowhead right where you were walking."
I don't know how I missed them, but I did find several bits of pottery and this:
Sorry the pics are so large.
One side is perfectly flat, the other is rounded and it's got all of these little glittery things in it (quartz?). Fits exactly in the palm of my hand, rounded side to palm and indentions for my thumb and fingers on the other side. I was told it could be some type of mortar or something for grinding meal and that the rust-colored squiggly lines were paint.
What do y'all think?
