Outstanding!! I'm now just re-reading this. Great stuff!!It has never been our creed to leave anything behind that might add to our comfort in camp. A list of articles taken might astonish some sportsman, who from necessity or other cause, have made a study of how to travel and hunt lightly equipped. Our boat enables us to carry all that we may need without special inconvenience and it is rarely that our needs while out even to the smallest article go unsupplied. It is easier to take than to do without

Sadly, I doubt literature as fine as this could ever be published again in this day and age.and the clusters of negroes that come
out on the little galleries curiously to gaze after us look
sufficiently forlorn and distressed to invite a passing
sympathy. Still as a rule they are fed and sustained
during these overflows by the owners of the land they
till, and they pass through a disaster of this kind comparatively
free from trouble. Among these laboring
classes, taking the negroes all in all, they comprise the
happiest race of people on earth, caring only for the
mouthful they eat to-day and the few clothes they wear
on their backs.

Really good reads. I love how the author is able to paint a picture of the scenes and not overlook details which today would seem unimportant. I'm not saying all outdoor writers today are ungifted, but you just don't see articles like this anymore much. The way they write and words they use are just different. Seems like they are more educated than us today on proper writing, which I would fail miserably at since I struggled with writing all through school. Also, it seems often that common men, who were educated of course, did much of the writing in those days. Not so much as a job but as a contribution to a magazine.

Apparently there was global warming back in 1889.
And in 1889, there was not an abundant supply of game ---- very few ducks, deer, turkey, etc. I guess the good ol days weren't really that good.?
