Not trying to hijack the thread but am curious about this too. They are currently laying this fiber in our neighborhood right now. Looked online at their pricing and channel options. They want $140 per month for TV & Internet but I think you get a $10 discount if you have CSpire cell service. Doesn't make sense for me to switch from DirecTV & Comcast internet right now as I am only paying $110 per month for both.
Check pricing on internet only. That's what will allow you to efficiently utilize streaming TV service without paying Comcast, DirecTV, etc. You're likely to find that unless you want to stream to multiple TVs at the same time, you're probably better off looking for internet service from a Cable or DSL service. That'll run $20-$40/month instead of fiber which runs $80+/month.

one thing i did forget to mention is that it benefited me greatly to run cat5e rj45 drops to each room with a TV. I get a lot less lag than i previously did using wireless on 3+ devices. Wireless routers can get saturated when multiple devices are utilizing them in a heavy manner regardless of what their speed ratings proclaim.

Another way to improve the network performance is to utilize QoS features to prioritize network traffic for video streaming. There are several hot to's on this subject if you Google it.

Hey man, I know you got this thing out of a comic book. I saw the add $2.95 it was right next to the sea monkeys.

Sling TV is available on the Roku 3. I added it last night but haven't signed up yet.

Edub,
Share some of your sources for the KODI

The cat5 drops are a long term goal of mine, but in the short term I need to find a way to optimize my datausage. The best internet I can get is AT&T DSL (the old Bellsouth) at 6mbs. Our data usage cap is 150 GB. We have chromecasts on 3 tvs, a macbook, an ipad, 3 iphones and a desktop (not on the wireless). Will the QoS how-to's help with data usage as well? I've been meaning to look this all up but it's one thing after another around here.

I'm running an ancient Linksys Wireless-G router that I've had for ages. What should I upgrade to to help with connectivity/speed? I've started having problems with it and I have to unplug it to reset it.

Now that I have my antenna/pre-amp/rotor up I can get all of the locals I can cut Dish. Picking up all major networks and their extra digital channels (28 altogether).

SlingTV looks great, but with youtube, netflix, etc we're already eating up 150GB a month - I got the warning message earlier this month then ever. I end up paying for another 50GB at least. I know uVerse has a cap of 250GB and is faster for the same price. I'll be glad when(if) they finally get it here. But, for now - what can I do?

Will do when i get home. I have an all in one .zip saved that you simply need to import into KODI. I'll host it somewhere for you to pull down.

http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install_ad ... _zip_files

https://superrepo.org/get-started/ Is also a good source to add for importing add on's.

I currently have DSL Xtreme through ATT, so the same as you. I haven't gotten the dirty little notice about going over yet, however i know that i have based off of my data usage logging built into my Netgear R6300v2. My bill is still the same old 39 bucks that it's always been and I've been blowing over 150 in about 1-2 weeks of a billing cycle.

I gave up on linksys routers years ago due to their notorious lock up reset issues. They eventually get to where you have to power cycle them daily. The problem generally stems from firmware/hardware overheating which causes them to hang. If you have one that is locking up and are tech savvy look into DD-WRT firmware.I prefer Netgear wireless routers myself but I've seen good things with some of the ASUS as well. My Netgear R6300v2 extends a signal well outside of my house and provides ample coverage inside(2880 sq ft house with bonus).

Enabling QoS will not help you from a data usage standpoint really. What it does is simply identify the type of packets flowing through and prioritize them based on the QoS table defined by you or your router. I for instance prioritize video sources defined in my table to allow the highest usage of bandwidth while keeping web browsing and other content set to a lower priority.

We have used both. The Roku Stick was terrible. It just didn't have enough guts to effectively stream over WiFi. It would lock up often and have to be restarted. We have had the Roku3 for a few months now and it hasn't locked up yet (knock on wood) streaming over WiFi. You can add the Roku remote app to your phone so typing in searches is much easier than using the included handheld remote.

I have the DD-WRT firmware download on my computer but I've been afraid to pull the trigger.

Is this the router you're talking about?

http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Router-AC ... ar+R6300v2

I just found this program a minute ago and it looks cool: https://www.glasswire.com/
Not sure if similar info is provided with newer router interfaces but this would help me pinpoint where my data is going.

For those asking about antennas - I'll post my set up when I get back home on Monday (waiting on the Boss so we can get on the road).

Yeah that's the one i have. You can run DD-WRT on it as well if you want. I can't remember if the native firmware lets you look at a per device log of usage or not. I know it provides a entire usage summary per day/week/month.
