Extreme Cold Weather Gear

Icebreaker merino wool. Get an upper that zips for regulating heat. I worked/hunted in that plus fewer layers than I've ever worn for the weather we had last weekend and I was very comfortable. Best part is I wore the base layer for three days and they did not retain ANY odor. That includes running two tanks of gas through a chain saw and being around campfire at night. Very impressed and I will be ordering the 260 base layer for colder weather and still hunting.

Just got back from NW Montana and after living like this for a week...

Layering is key. For me it's a silk base layer, ulfrotte wool underwear over that, and king of the mountain over that. Falke expedition socks in muck arctic pro boots. If it's too cold for that setup, get in a heater body suit and that's the end of the story for big game anyway.

For me it was about having the right layers so you can regulate body temp as your activities change. For the most part I wore merino wool base layer, carhart pants, fleece mid layer shirt, and then i rotated between cabelas wooltimate with windshear when it was 0-20 and arcteryx shells when it was 20-30. I stayed very comfortable and dry, which is pretty important for a 3 hour sit after a 2 mile hike up a mountain in 18" of snow.

A heck of an experience. Saw deer elk moose but no wolf and that's what we were after. Snow and ice kept us off the top ridges where they run. But the local trappers were shut down for three days even with snow machines so that helped ease the pain.
