'Contrary to what most have been told and brainwashed to think, CC is not a curriculum. Nor is it a set of instructional methods. CC is nothing more than a set of minimal standards that any child at a certain grade level should know, no matter where he lives. It is the state/local district prerogative to select curricula to introduce subject matter that leads the student to the standard. And it is the local district that develops instructional strategies to teach the curricula. It is in no way an attempt to take control away from state and local districts. The districts are free to add to the standards as they see fit.
I am a local control guy through and through. And I have studied CC at length and depth and helped develop my districts methods and curricula to teach them. There is absolutely not one thing that I object to in the standards. Too many politicians have seized the conversation surrounding CC and have thoroughly misled the American people. It is my professional and personal belief that CC is the best chance we have had in a while to make sure all children have a core set of knowledge across the country. If states would get off their asses and get the teachers what they need to teach them and if politicians would get out of education and let teachers alone long enough to get something done without jumping onto another bandwagon, CC has a great deal of potential for good.
Do yourself a favor...quit believing what every damn politician says about education and listen to what educators say about education. You could take what the entire state legislature knows about education and you couldn't fill a thimble.
Time for a drink!
