Drakeshead wrote:There was a thread on this type of Mallard awhile back on this site. You'll have to do a search for it. From what we taught on that thread, when the hen mallard gets older and stops estrogen production, she starts to exhibit male colors.
So it could technically be called a post menopausal duck?????????????? :D

Eg-zachary.
Old hen, IMHO.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

Hold the duck upside down by its feet and yell down in between its legs...if it echoes, old hen. There you go.

Well crap. Try this one: http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/bird ... allard.htm

Look at the white bars above the blue speculum to see if they stop at or extend past the proximal edge.

100%. Old hen mallards (like human females) stop producing the same amount of estrogen as when they are younger. In humans, some old ladies start getting a little facial hair. In mallards specifically, they get a little green on the head, and brown chest. I've seen the with just a slight bit of green on their head, all the way to looking 100% like a drake, with the only exception being that hens will always have the characteristic orange bill. Pheasants also will do this as well. My dad shot one in SD with a colored head, but brown hen body.
