Opening Morning Report

Public report. Too much water and couldn't get to plan A, got beat to plan B, plan C equaled 1 teal for my group of two. Walking through the cypress and spanish moss in the full moon is worth getting up for. Only had one group of 4 big ducks even take a look at us. Virtually nothing flying.

Went back and grilled burgers then rode and scouted and listened to the game with Mr. Daniels.

Sunday. Got up extra early, made breakfast and got to a new (for me) spot. It was a really pretty spot and morning. By about 8:00, we had a mixed bag of 11 - 3 mallards, 3 "grey ducks" as Jeff and Dos Gris call them, 3 woodies and 2 widgeon. The ducks worked perfect for our setup.

We had one group of 3 hunters come in and set up about 75 yards behind us. I don't know why they bothered. What little wind there was was bad wrong for there. I was stewing, but they wound up never calling and never shooting. Go figure. I couldn't decide if they were VERY courteous, or just green amateurs who stumbled into the spot. I would have at least called to the ducks when they came to look at my spread. Anyway, it was a really good hunt and much more productive than I ever expected given the circumstances.

I've said it before, the only time a slam full parking lot is a good thing is when you are the first one back and you have a string full of ducks!

GENERAL DUCK REPORT - basically, there are no ducks and the forecast sux. I need to get myself a fishing report from Hopedale/Delacroix.

Greenwood Area:

Opening morning 7 hunters, 18 ducks. Mostly teal, some Gads and Mallards. my group of 4 saw 1500 to 2000 in the air. Saw a bunch of pintails.

Sun. morning. 5 hunters, 1 blue wing teal. Saw 500 birds in the air. Pintails gone.

Are there any reports of good weekends south of Clarksdale? Sounds like all the good, not great, but good reports are coming from the north part of the state.

Rotdorn,
from your description of opening day, I'd swear that you were hunting with me.

Actually, I saw quite a few ducks, mostly mallards and gadwalls, but they were hard to work. It didn't help that my blind which WAS sitting behind lots of standing beans on the edge of a field looked more like a sunken pit in the middle of a huge lake.

The good news for me is that out of all of the flooded fields I passed while driving home, the only one with ducks in the area was mine.

One more thing. Driving thru Tchula and Greenwood on the way to my camp in the Greenwood area on Friday afternoon, I saw enough water to fill the Atlantic Ocean, and about 6 ducks.

Lots of Ducks and Geese both days. I'm ready to go back next weekend!!!
Only thing that went bad was my equipment!!! 4Wheeler wouldn't start Saturday morning, luckily it was just a fouled plug. BUT then on Sunday on the way home I had a major transmission failure and had to be towed in!!! It can only get better, I hope!!!

Greenwood-Malmaison area, 1 blind, 4 guns:
Saturday - 10 mallards, 3 gadwalls - did not fire until after 10:00am.
Sunday - 1 malland hen (not me).

I predict better hunting next weekend given that AR will shoot and we won't this week, and hopefully the water will fall some - let's hope anyway.
