I guess I assumed since the dog was collar conditioned she was old enough for the advice given.EvanG wrote:I appreciate all the good intent, but Holy Cow! Isn't anyone going to ask how old this pup is? How much training it's had? What tools does the OP have to work with?

worked today on keeping her sitting and not moving while dead birds were thrown to eventually at her feet she did well, i'm going to continue this for a while, and hopefully find some live birds to put in front of her in the next week or so. then we will revisit gun, if that goes well.
thanks again for all the help boys.

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day

Re: dog breaking
I think I confused you about the retriever trainer. I am actually talking about the tool (device that launches dummies by using a .22 blank) not a professional dog trainer. I have used one numerous times to steady a dog. U have the boom, the (dummy) bird, and the fall, just not a live bird. At first you will want a buddy to operate the device while you hold the lead with your dog at heel. Then, gradually work toward being able to operate the device yourself without a break.
Also, if you have a friend with a (well trained) retriever, use the retriever trainer with both dogs an make your dog honor the other dog as it retrieves. This is the same principle as earlier mentioned about you picking up the bird, except you don't have to wear yourself out.
Hope this information helps.

I'm sorry, I still don't see the age and developmental level of this dog. Good luck with him.

if he's hunting you would assume he's OB, CC, FF, and steady...oh wait...
If he's not the first three and he's hunting it's a lost cause anyways
Re: dog breaking
One of the inherent problems with Internet forums is that we're often left to try to help someone based on assumptions. That can be a dangerous practice in behalf of the dog. I'd rather know more about the dog and his skills before suggesting something he may not be ready for. Seems more responsible to me.Relentless wrote:EvanG wrote:I'm sorry, I still don't see the age and developmental level of this dog. Good luck with him.
