look here now!
I accepted it when ya'll said a tomato wasn't a vegatable but rather a fruit.
I gritted my teeth and keep my mouth shut when ya'll said i can't call a peanut a nut, but that it is a "legume" - whatever the hell that is. you tell me how to say pealegume.
but i will not, WILL NOT, be cooking up no big azzed banana when it turns black and calling it a plantain, plantane, platane - whatever.

As far as I know a yam isn't grown anywhere in the us. On the other had, sweet potatoes are called yams in different parts of the us for marketing purposes. Most sweet potatoes from ms are grown right here close to Vardaman, ms. Different varieties are available, but the most popular here is the Beauregard. North Carolina is the biggest producer of sweet potatoes, with Mississippi second. In North Carolina, the common variety is the Covington. The Beauregard is supposedly the sweeter of the two so I encourage y'all to look for ms packaged sweet potatoes when you buy. Most of the tater farmers are my customers. Duck$$$ should chime in. He knows sweet potatoes.
Re: need a little help here....
Yep, you are correct flyhi. True yams are not grown in the USA. Sweet potato is grown here but in many varieties. Sweet potatoes were called yams early by the good people of south LA. They were shipped to other parts of the country and were branded yams because they were sweeter than other varieties grown in other areas. They were sweet potatoes but branded yams if they came from south LA. Actually it's against the law to brand a sweet potato a yam. It's considered mis branding by the USDA. All labels should contain sweet potato only or sweet potato/ yam on the box or label. Actually heard of customers in the Northeast who would only buy yams not sweet potato. Just had to change the label to include yams. Center for science and public interest lists sweet potato as America's healthiest vegetable. Also one of the worlds superfoods and considered the best food to have if you could only choose one. Eat them up !!! Adds millions of $$ to the MS Economy.

I DO believe that alcohol was involved. If it wasn't, it should have been.dukluk wrote:How ... the h3ll did Delta State EVER come to name their mascot, the "Fightin' Okra"???.
