Big Green Egg Question

A guy who sells them (Derrick at clear choice in Grenada) told me not to get the XL because it's overkill for a family. He said it would use more charcoal. He talked me out of it and he sells them so that said a lot to me. My 2 pennies

If you've got the cash, go ahead and get the XL. I've got a L and have never needed a bigger one but bigger is always better. I would definitely get a BGE tho. That Bayou Classic is a cheap POS IMO. The differences in the quality are huge! I just pulled 2 Boston butts off mine about an hour after a 13 hour smoke!!

They are both ceramic grills regulated with air flow. Please explain the diff in the two

I've had my egg for about a year and a half. I originally went to lowes and bought a BC "Combo" for $799 + Tax which was, let's say $860 tax in. When looking at the display at lowes I noticed a good bit of cracking in the ceramic. Having never looked at a BGE I just took it as that was normal and bought it anyways. They loaded up a brand new BC still in the crate in my truck and home i went. After unpacking that sum buck I discovered what looked like a box full of broke up ceramic grill. It looked like someone took a Louisville Slugger to that bad boy..so i hauled it back to lowes to exchange it. They had one more in stock, so before loading it up, we opened the box to check it out...same thing! Long story short, this made me rethink my decision and I decided to at least go look at the BGE, so I did. I get to the BGE store and at first look, it literally blew my mind at the obvious differences in the quality! The surfaces on the BGE were smooth and clean, no cracking, it is much heavier and there is just an obvious difference in materials used in making these 2 products. It was a no brainer for me. I paid $799 for just the egg and built my table using all treated products including 4x4 legs for $65 and about 2 hours of my time. Now, I didnt get the cover and drip pan and whatever else comes with the BC, but haven't really found where I needed any of that. I'm sure the BC can cook just as good, I don't know, don't own one. I was buying a lifetime grill and the BGE looked to be the obvious winner to me for roughly the same money. Now, if they sold that thing for about $400 bucks, which is probably closer to what it's worth, I may could see it.

Sounds like Lowe's had a unloading problem! I love my BC. Haven't had any problems with mine. Jelly loves his!! Plus BC looks better! ha

The "cracking" you saw in the BC was not in the ceramic, it was in the glaze over the ceramic. It's supposed to be like that, just a different treatment to the outside of the grill.

I think that was part of the problem, for sure! Ha I'm glad you like yours!

Umm..Yep, it was in the ceramic for sure, there were hairline cracks and imperfections inside of the bowls of everyone I looked at at several different Lowes stores last year. Now, maybe yours doesn't have that, maybe the Lowes "Version" is a little cheaper version like most other things that the big box stores sell. Either way, I still stand by the fact that there's a big difference in the quality of these two products and if you placed them side by side I think you and anyone else would have to agree if you looked at it.

Checked a couple of Green Egg "Egghead" forums......topic was XL vs L......overwhelmingly everyone said to go with the XL. Most said they now own both XL and L because the L didn't provide enough space at times. Also said there was NO difference in the performance between L and XL.....all the talk about issues with heats etc is just that....talk. That comes from people owning both.....gotta go with it.

I also heard that Big Green Egg and Bayou Classic were both coming out with a spinning wing decoy (mojo) this summer.....iI wonder which one will be the best.

I got an XL a month ago and it has been great. I have actually filled it to capacity a few times and was glad I had the XL. It does pretty good on charcoal usage. Over the BGE has been great. In my opinion, the XL has been worth the extra money.
