some info suggest as many as 50% of Bites are "dry" no venom...so you could get lucky, however it will probably be the Heart Attack that gets me anyway

Good friend of mines son was bitten twice by a cotton mouth while swimming in a creek... he was flown to UMC in Jackson and given 10 viles of anti venom @ $7,000 per vile. Stayed in the hospital for 6 days. They were jumping in the creek and running thru some grass at the edge... he thought a bee stung him. Must have stepped on the snake for two bites.

I admitted 2 snake bites to UMC last summer, 2 weeks apart. One was a farmer walking down a crop row after a rain. He was wearing shorts and it popped him just above the ankle. He was a big ole cornfed tuff country boy and he cried like a baby for damn near 36 hours. His leg swole up to 2.5x his normal size... not an exaggeration, I measured it when he came in before it started really swelling. He swore he'd never wear shorts again checking crops. The other was a copperhead bite. A guy reached up under an old lawnmower to get a ball for his kid and got zapped. His wasn't near as bad, he was out the next day. I don't think he got a lot of venom, just sort of a "warning shot". There were a couple others admitted that I know of, I just didn't take care of them.

Now I don't go out of my way to hunt a snake but if one gets up on me I will follow Biblical teaching and bruise his head....

I have seen my dad get bite twice. Once was a Cottonmouth that bite him on his index finger (Cleaning up a brush pile). He shook the snake off and went back to work. Almost two weeks later we finally talked him into going to the doc because it turned black and looked like it was going to bust. Doc said that if he had not died by now he would be ok and sent him home with antibiotics. About a week later it was back to normal. If my memory serves me right, he was rather intoxicated when this one happened. Might have been what saved him. IDK
Second time he was cleaning out a culvert under the driveway and a small copperhead bit him on the hand again but this time nothing happened. Toughest man I have ever known.

Someone posted above said it would probably make him have a heart attack.
Knew a guy back home that took a dry bite from a cottonmouth while checking gates in the rice field. No venom at all was injected. He actually did have a small heart attack and at the time he was a young man (sub 30).

Ok - I will now either purchase snake gaiters to go over my Muck Boots, or will purchase some new boots in the Anti-Snake style.
No doubt, a fear of mine during turkey season.

Got popped on my ring finger trying to unsnag a mepps spinner from some willow roots. It was either a snake or a frog; I don't know which because I stumbled back on the bank and busted my !@#$ so fast I didn't see it for a split second. Still have two little 1/2 inch long scars on my finger where he broke the skin.

only problem with snake boots and gaiters/chaps, is you tend to not pay near as close attention. i have been struck 4 times in snake boots (used to cruise timber in some pretty bad areas on the yalabusha) 2 cottonmouths same day, a copper head and a canebreak.
one thing i notiticed, the cottonmouths and copper head all struck low(below ankle) even being close, the rattler, struck me on the tonuge of my boots!! the danners are 18" boots and there were wet spots on either side of the danner logo. all were my fault to a point, i was standing on the copper heads tail (kinda pissed him off he struck several time before i knew what was happening) cotton mouths i was in their territory in early spring diggin out beaver dams they were living in/on, rattler, think we suprised each other when i got to the top of a gully i had just crossed near enid lake, however i think he suprised me more, clean drawers were in order after that one!!
best 160 bucks i ever spent!!!! , but Danner makes a great boot

I've always heard cotton mouths struck and hold on. I'd hate to get hit by one and have to pull him off. He would most likely get a mouth full of poo also if he held on for long
