Well A.Hole (sorry couldnt resist
), ordinarily i would agree with you on the media thing. But they just try to keep the spot light off Obama and the Gov. and if the media think by down playing this whole ordeal will achieve that, than thats exactly how they will want you to perceive it. I'm hearing alot of chit down here about how the government didn't respond quickly enough or didn't consider this a huge threat until days after the event took place. If that is in fact the case(i'm not pointing fingers just giving plausible options) than i can easily see the media down playing this event.

The words got this forwarded to me always makes me skeptical....and I can not imagine the news media makeing things better than what they really are.......not calling anyone a liar, just sayin I have a bit of trouble beleiving it.

mottlet, I understand what your saying. Yes, redundancy is key. However if the main piece fails, all the redundancy in the world won't operate the failed part. In this case, something is obviously wrong with the BOP. It should be operable via submersible, this case it's not. For all we know the safety systems in place on the drilling rig could have been telling the BOP to close. BOPs are also tested every 14 days and this is an MMS requirement. The PSH (psi safety high), PSL (psi safety low), LSH (level safety high) and LSL (level safety low) devices are all tested monthly. There are more safety devices in place offshore than there are on land. Yes they can get access quicker, but wouldn't you still want the full safety system no matter what?

The State Farm agent is a friend of mine and keeps an offshore boat at the marina at Ocean Springs. the people that are involved in the email forwarding thing are fellow boat owners concerned about the status of their boats. Its not your ordinary forwarded emails from uninterested parties.

Thanks Banker, I really hate to hear this, a friend was at Breton island two days ago and said there was minumum sign at best...I really hate to hear this news. Five minutes ago I was riding down 90 beach in Pass Christian. I saw at least 16 vans full of workers walking the beach with shovels apprently scooping small bits of sand. I didnt see much sign of spill but apparently something is going on.
Edit: Just found this on Rodnreel, confirms what Bank said, http://www.sunherald.com/2010/05/02/2150396/oil-weaves-through-chandelur-islands.html not sure how I missed this!!

You just can't make this stuff up. Obama...is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years, according to financial disclosure records.

Re: Oil Spill in Gulf
they got one of the 3 leaks stopped today.
VENICE, LA (WAFB/AP) - The Coast Guard is reporting one of the three leaks in the Gulf of Mexico has been capped. Officials say it is "not a significant" leak. It is a smaller one, but still an improvement. BP also confirmed the leak was capped. The major leak is still flowing and the 98-ton dome is expected to move out to sea Wednesday.
Gov. Bobby Jindal will travel to Venice Wednesday morning where he will join Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser to activate the parish's first jack up barge for oil response efforts and highlight plans by the state and coastal parishes to mitigate the impact of the oil spill on Louisiana's coast.

They say they've got the new, smaller dome / cap thing on the sea floor and are going to take their time putting it over the leak. Supposedly there's something in their to keep the methane from freezing. Keep your fingers crossed.

They will be injecting methanol (a simple alcohol) and heated water inside the dome to try and stop the hydrates from freezing. The theory on the smaller dome, "top hat", is to have less water within the dome itself.
They are saying it will be in place by Thursday (tomorrow).

Re: Oil Spill in Gulf
Actually Cooper Cameron in Morgan city just completed a huge Junk Manifold that is on the site of the well now and they are going to try and plug up the BOP with it. My father was at their shop last week while they were turning and burning to build this thing so they can flange this thing up. Lets hope it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Oil Spill in Gulf
Now they've said the hydraulic supply that powers the BOP had/has a leaking fitting, keeping it from working. Seems to me they could repair the fitting and seal 'er right up...
Re: Oil Spill in Gulf
The plugging route is if the 2nd dome fails, but they were not going to wait to build the manifold until the last minute.
