Ask DS: trout fishing around Gatlinburg

Postby Luckydawg » Fri Jun 07, 2013 1:47 pm

Got to go in a couple weeks and I have a nephew that wants to trout fish. Any info on where to go and what tackle to use would be greatly appreciated. I thought I remembered some place close to Cade's Cove that was supposed to be good but I can't remember any specifics.

You may want to driver over to Cherokee, NC. The license for the reservation is a lot cheaper than either the NC/TN state license. There is a pretty nice flyshop located in Cherokee as well that will help you. Plus, Cherokee stocks their streams 1-2 times per week...some are trophy sized. Unless you are a die hard fly fisherman, every little bit helps.

I can whip up the water pretty good with a fly rod! Lol
I will need all the help I can get!
My nephew has been a couple times but I believe he uses a spinning rod/reel.

I had a pretty good time up there a when i was about 12 or 13 with an ultralight spinning rig and some 1" plastic crawfish on 1/16 oz jigs. Caught a few small trout and several smallmouths.

There's a kids only stream up the road from the Pancake restaurant. Not sure, that may be airport road. Anyway, there is a park on the right, where the road leans left. The stream is the size of a ditch. But it is stocked FULL of nice rainbows 9" - 13" in size. Don't let Mr. Greenjeans catch you fishing. You are only allowed to help the kid.
Never assume.
