Salt lick/mineral sites?
Salt lick/mineral sites?
What do you find works best? Salt, mineral block, deer cocaine, trophy rock, etc? Hard for me to swallow $18 for a dadgum rock!

The only trophies anyone who puts out a trophy rock will see is a trophy idiot. Those things are about as big of a racket as buying roundup at lowes. Complete waste of money.
At a minimum get the mineral blocks/or bagged salt at the Coop(same thing as the trophy rock just not reaming out your wallet). Sanders sells a mineral mix Excaliber. I like it. Someone on here puts koolaid mix out to draw em in/establish the site. I've never tried it but I imagine some purple drank would spice things up for my deer.

I agree. I'm just wanting a cheap way to establish a site that I can get pics over before and during the early season.

Excalibur is by far the easiest IMO and it works. I run a lot of cameras and its all i use. I pour it over decaying stumps and the deer will literally eat the stump to the ground. Its about $20 a 40 lb sack but i get 2 or 3 sites out of one bag.

You can make your own cheap. I go to my co-op and buy a bag of just plain salt, a bag of trace mineral, and a bag of dried molasses. Mix them all together in a tub. Bout 3 gallons is usually a good start then maybe freshen it up 2-3 months later depending on how much rain you get to melt it in.
Re: Salt lick/mineral sites?
All I use is one bag of trace mineral at each site. No crazy mixes - just put it in the right place and you'll have a hole in the ground.

Re: Salt lick/mineral sites?
i like to put them on clay soils,
i dig a hole about 8" - 12" deep
pour in two bags of salt, and a bag or trace, and i usually throw a little dirt on top.
i top them off each year with about 1/2 bag of salt at the end of turkey season.

Red blocks from the Co-op or TSC are an easy way to start a site. After they lick the block down they'll dig the hole themselves. 2' around a few inches deep. Then you can add a bag if trace or just throw another block in there. Never had any luck with the white blocks or deer cane or any of that stuff.
Re: Salt lick/mineral sites?
I got a ton a few weeks ago of a mix of dicalcium phosphate, mineral salt, lime, and a sweetener with a vitamin pack. I figured if I was going to do something I might as well put out a mix that had as much benefit for them possible. I doubt I'll be able to tell any difference but they are KILLING IT right now. Cams go up next month.
Re: Salt lick/mineral sites?
Anyone know of a co-op or feed store near flora that would have trace minerals? I know of the one in canton, thought there may be one closer.

That need feed and tack place on 49 in flora should have it. If not then come down to Clinton and get it at Johnsons Milling. I know for a fact that they have it because we buy it there all the time.

Thanks. Stopped in there yesterday and got a bag of trace mineral salt. Nice guys.
Re: Salt lick/mineral sites?
I also heard of putting baking soda in the mix to help reduce the acidity. Makes it more palatable for the deer.
No, i don't want to know you ---- teul
