We going to Disney in 7 days and many people have told me this exact same thing. Start left. You get some wait when you meet back up with the crowd, but it thins up again as you leave the crowd again.
I agree whole heartedly in the idea of getting there before the park opens. A good option to consider if you plan way ahead of time is to do a Character breakfast in the park scheduled for prior to opening. We go every year the week before Christmas (a great time to go to Disney). (I have found the the two weeks prior to Christmas week is the best time to go as far as weather and crowds.) At MGM you can schedule a character breakfast for one hour prior to park opening. They let you in the gate, have breakfast prior to opening and when you are finished you can stroll around in front of the restaurant before they even let anyone else in the park. We usually do this and get a fast pass for Toy Story and then ride Toy Story. During Christmas, we were at the park before opening and after 3 -4 hours we had done all the rides/shows we wanted to do and then hung out and ate before going back to the hotel and laying low for a while. I can assure you that if you go early, you can get more done in the first 3-4hours than if you go at 10:30 a.m. and stay until night.
