Agree. I would also say to bight the bullet and get the XLarge BGE. I have an XL and there are some days I wish i had more. My bussied that got the Larger often wish they had more room. I got my for Fathers Day last year.......keep your eyes open, there will be some deals coming.
I'm looking into this as well. Had a distributor tell me that their BGE rep says that if you need the extra space buy a Large and a Small or two Larges because the XLarge burns so much more charcoal you will save a huge chunk of money in the long run. Sounds like it would take a REALLY long time to burn that much charcoal to me.

How much are you burning in your XL?
I can see that point of view.......I am not sure how to put a number on how much charcoal I use relative to the others.....one thing worth pointing out about the ceramic grills....everyone talks about how expensive the lump charcoal is. In the end i think it's cheaper. With traditional charcoal, after you cook a steak, the charcoal just burns off (waste). With the lumb charcoal, just "shut her down" and you use the same charcoal over and over and over. I can tellyuo this......when I am smoking something for 8...10...12 hours, my charcoal cost are cheaper than with a traditional smoker.

Maybe my desire for the XL has to do with my cooking methods. When rarely will cook a single Boston Butt for example........when I crank it up, I throw on a butt or two, ribs, chicken.......load it up and freeze meat that is left over.

Why would you Buy a BGE grill for twice as much as the Bayou Classic one that will do the same thing??? Maybe I'm cheap but i don't understand this...

i like my bayou classic, its made better than the egg if you ask me. my dads BGE doesn't seal as well, and the steel and hardware on the cypress grill is twice as heavy at the BGE, plus the cypress grill uses stainless hardware.

rack of lamb going on mine tomorrow night.

I don't think this is the case. Shut off the air to anything and it goes out. I put out charcoal briquettes in my Weber Kettle all the time, then continue burning them on the next cook.

From what I have seen, lump charcoal burns hotter and faster and is only good to use if you can finely control the air flow. This is possible in BGE's and other ceramic grills, but not on your standard charcoal grill (Weber, Char-Broil, etc.). Personally, I don't think it makes a huge difference in food quality, and if that's the case I'd go with whatever is cheaper over the long haul....... probably going to be briquettes.

P.S. I know what you guys mean by "re-use" charcoal, but technically it's only burning once  If yall figure out a way to get it to burn twice let me know.

I'm not sure where yall are buying it, but the lump charcoal is usually cheaper and in a ceramic grill lasts much longer. I have had a ten lb bag and have cooked steaks, hamburgers, ribs twice, and deer meat.... still have about 2-3 lbs left to use. Have never bought briquets and made them last that long.

I was skeptical at first but to buy a good charcoal grill now that last its not much more. BGE is the only local option and they carry all the acc. I have cooked a little of everything and have no complaints. I just have the large cause I use my 4' marrow when I have to cook alot.

Why yall keep arguing about how much a 10lb bag of charcoal cost? if you got enought $$$ to buy a $700+ grill you aint worried about the charcoal cost.

you bunch or rednecks

I'm sure prices have changed but when i priced the BGE against the Bayou..It was $200 if difference.....That's a big difference. That also was several...several years ago. I don't care if the BGE is $100 more...The question still stands..Why would you pay more for the same thing????

Kamado Big Joe all the way. The Big Joe is the largest ceramic grill on the market to my knowledge and it is worth every penny. Before you buy a grill, go put your hands on all 3 of the grills, Kamado, BGE, and Bayou Classic. Open each grill and look at the hinges of each one and see how sturdy they are. You will be shocked at how crappy some of these hinges are. When comparing price take into consideration that with the BGE that you will have to build a table or buy extra accessories i.e. stand and treys. The Kamado is one price and it comes with everything that you need. It is the best value for the whole setup and its the biggest. THis grill is a monster and will hold a ton of food. You can thank me later. I bought mine from Sutherlands in Jackson and they seemed to have the best price that I could find.

I sell a bunch of Kamado Joe's and haven't had a single complaint about them. The quality and customer service is there with them, plus you get a lot more bang for your buck than with some of the others (comes with shelving, cart, top gasket, etc.) I would always recommend using a good natural lump charcoal (we sell Wicked Good, it's hard to beat) for them.....

Nobody here has a primo? I have the oval xl and love it. I had a cypress and really like it. Had an accident and it got broken and went back with a primo. Huge cooking surface and also has the firebox divider so you can easily built fire on one side, for small cooks and Easily indirectly smokes two butts. Also made in the USA(only one that I know of that is)
