hasn't always been the case, young'uns....especially in small town college bars where good players are celebrities around town.SNOT wrote:Exactly - you hand em your debit / credit card and open a tab....they have your card until you close it at the end of the night....how do they (the bar) get stuck with the tab?

I was there the same time as Dixon just a few years ago and it was that way. Maybe in the Farve days it wasn't but the Dixon days it went hand debit card start the tab(sometimes they keep it until you close) close the tab when you leave or get charged $35. Occasionally they would hold your license until you paid if you said you were using cash. But either way you have lost your license or got charged $35 extra.

Re: Cowbells
Don't get me wrong I have no doubt in my mind that Dixon would try his best to get out of paying but at the end of the day when they have his card or license even if he leaves he still paid. I am sure he would beg bartenders and say charge me less that sounds just like him but if the bar says he didn't pay that's their fault for "not treating everybody the same" and getting his debit card in the beggining.

Re: Cowbells
It's 50-50 on getting asked for a card up front. Is this place strictly a bar?
Re: Cowbells
Not in Starkville you order a drink you are getting asked for some sort of debit or credit they swipe it then the CPU keeps track of your night. And it's a "resort" that basically is the only thing open late in Starkville. But it's usually a rough crowd anyway and always smokey. I went twice ever once after we beat vandy bc it was the only thing open once we got back. And then once late and there was a brawl between a family that was getting married the next day...the future husband and his soon to be brother in law. About 12 people ended break beer bottles over each other and it was just a little too Jerry Springer out there for me so I never went back.

Re: Cowbells
Regardless of card or how crappy cowbells is. The point is State will just continue to get outdone by Ole Miss until there is a form of catering to the football program from the town. I went on my visits to colleges and I know mine in Starkville was actually fun and I know Ole Misses are also but with stuff like this happening the recruits are not going to want to go to state. THAT is my main concern.

true... as well as what you say about order anything in a bar now and some type of card is taken (cc or id) to hold.Rice wrote:... but with stuff like this happening the recruits are not going to want to go to state. THAT is my main concern.
i'm thinking back to when a friend managed old venice back in the king jackie era (and into the early croom years) and was always having trouble with players and tabs...i guess back then there were more thugs at play.

Re: Cowbells
Everybody talks about how well off Dixon is because he plays in the NFL but last I checked he makes about $450K a year. $450,000 in San Francisco doesn't seem like it would go very far to me. Certainly not enough to be running up large tabs in bars and buying everybody drinks. Did he get a big signing bonus that I missed or something?

NFL players make way more than just their salary... $450,000 a year plus around $100,000 after taxes for signing bonus plus they get player performance checks for every single play and I would imagine his would be something around another $200,000. So you are looking around $750,000 a year. Which means if he doesn't spend 2 grand a day he is coming out ahead. Both of my room mates from college play in the NFL and both have about $1800 rent so let's say 1 day they spend that $2000 on living expensise maybe $4000 a month with food ect so that leaves roughly 28 days where they have $2000 a day they didn't spend. Going out and spending $2000 at a bar doesn't hurt much. And then if you are like well what about their escalades ect. Well that's $70,000 taken away and you have to realize they have this coming in annually so for him after 3 years he has plenty in the bank. Although I would imagine him to be one to find a way to blow it faster than most he could afford a decent tab. Some players I know will go out and get a table at clubs and drop $20,000 in a night easy.

Re: Cowbells
yeah, every bar i've frequented in the last 4 years or so, if you open a tab they swipe your card in their POS and give it back or they hold your card until time to close. that's all on cowbells if they let people leave without closing tabs. i honestly thought starkville would cater to that kind of crowd as far as recrutis goes, i know in oxford we do pretty well with it. The recruits or some of the players may not pay cover or something like that, but bars manage to get them in no mater how packed the place is. and i'm sure most if not all the time their drinks are on the house.
but from a business owner standpoint, if that guy came in and didn't pay a dime and ran up a healthy tab at my expense, when he knew he was responsible, i don't care if it is my fault you ain't coming back until we are square...

Re: Cowbells
From the comments in this thread, I can see why the recruits just love Starkville ---- very cosmopolitan.

Re: Cowbells
You know that's the problem , Anthony Dixon thinks he is better than anybody else , Who gives a ****. He is no more important than any other person who goes somewhere. Last time I checked a $ was a dollar. No matter if It came from Dixon, or from me or any of you.
He is used to getting everything free when in Starkville ....... Including an education.
