ADS Roofers - Insurance Checks

Postby RDB » Mon Apr 15, 2013 5:06 am

Since the hail storm we've had so many roofing companies coming around offering to do work to repair roofs. When asked how much they could repair my roof for they say "Whatever the insurance pays".

Ok so here's my question.... Most of the homes here in our subdivison are approximately the same size... so let's say for instance my insurance allows 6K to repair my roof and my neighbor's insurance allows 9k for the same type roof wouldn't that be price gouging?

Now I'm talking about just removing the old shingles, putting new ones on with felt... period. Not counting gutters, vents, etc.

All of them have ask to see my claim and I've told them to it wasn't any of their damn business.

Can someone fill me in on why this is going on?

They are trying to get all of your insurance money. I ran into same thing. I finally found someone on here that would come out look at it and give a reasonable estimate, do a good job, and stick to the price at pay time. Here's their #

S Vaughn is right they are greedy, and are driving the price of insurance up. The out of town outfits also dont install to MS windpool regulations so be careful not to run into someone who isnt up on the current MS codes and the manufacturer codes...which are different but neccesary for warranty and for the Ins co. to pay a future claim. Good Luck.

I hate to hi-jack a thread, but I have a question, and I need some info. I have had a bunch of roofers contact me wanting to put a sign in my yard, stating that they will replace the roof for what the insurance company will pay, and these guys are from places like Kansas City, Tulsa, etc., but they have offices in Flowood, Byrum, or somewhere else local. My crap-detector goes off when I speak with these guys, but I can't quite put my finger on the reason. I don't think it is because they sound like they are selling snake oil out of a van, although I can't be sure.

Am I just being paranoid, or are they doing a good job for a fair price? Please let me know.

FYI - I have spoken with a local guy (recommended by one on this site), but he says he's being backed up due to weather, and he's going to resubmit a proposal for the job.

I had a similar situation, pre- hail storm. But the guy was trying to assure me I was not going to be "out of pocket" anything. In other words: usually your check is estimated repair/replacement cost less your deductible, and some of these guys are trying to let you not be out your deductible. I am not advocating for them as I have no clue who all has stopped by and I had someone local do mine. He was great to work with and was very price conscience. We had some unforeseen expenses come up and he pointed them out and at the end, he ate those cost b/c he had quoted me a 1 stop shop price. I appreciate folks who stick to the same story at the end.

good luck

here's my process. if it's a total loss and needs a full replacement i make the roofer that YOU choose submit an estimate. and that is what we pay. if the figure he comes up with is more than what my adjuster says, no problem, we can get the insured the additional money to cover the difference. of course this is less your deductibe... if the roofers cost is less than we pay, then i tell my insured to keep their mouth shut.

These out of town outfits roll into town and get a po box or storage unit type place and a local phone number. They wont be here down the road when your shingles start slipping because of shotty work. Use someone local. Also, ask for a certificate of insurance from any roofer before allowing him to work. If hes out of town, call the agent and verify. When your insurance company denies a claim because the roof was put on improperly, you can atleast go back on his general liability.

On the price gouging...I've seen $200 a square for 3 tab 25 year tear off and replace....

It just kills me that they think people are that naive and some probably are but I can see through their scheme. I like to draw them in acting like an innocent homeowner then let them have it when I get them committed. Last one that came by ask what my insurance was allowing and I told him $2500 total and he held his hand out and said "We'll do it for that ". I politely ask do you think I'm a fool ? I know the materials will cost more than that so don't blow smoke up me a** and tell me it's on fire ! He just looked at me all bewildered. I told him to get to stepping.

Others have come by and I draw them in eventually asking them how much a square to R&R and they won't give me a figure. By the time I get through with them they are glad to get away from me. I hate freaking price gougers and there's a special place in H*LL for them !!!

Well said, Scotty Lee. I would add to that what others have said too - use someone local who you can trust. Make sure an adjuster or potential contractor also looks at your fence, gutters, mailbox, and screens as well. Those are also covered under your homeowners policy. Make sure those are set out in an estimate also. Some contractors will just take that money in the roof/gutter repair and if they do and are "working with you" on your deductible, you may just have to take it if those damages are not significant.

Fly-by-night roofers are the worst. My dad works for a commercial roofing company on the coast and they are still making repairs on shoddy work provided by these scam artists after Katrina. Save yourself a lot of headache and use a local company that can be held accountable. Many people down here have learned this the hard way.
