Re: Open Carry video. Law Student vs. Cop
cop seemed to handle it well. sounds like some upity law student trying to start crap with "the man."
Re: Open Carry video. Law Student vs. Cop
I like, glad he was knowledgable enough to put them in there place. I support law enforcement 100%, I understand they have a tough job to do, but I feel SOME over step their boundaries of the law much to often. Sometimes their ego clouds their judgement. Perceived or not, I feel some law enforcement believe a badge gives them free range to do whatever they please!!

Cop handled it better than most.
Re: Open Carry video. Law Student vs. Cop
The Law student is 100% correct in this instance. Apparently, it is an open carry State, and the student was exercising his right to carry a firearm just as anyone would exercise their right to walk across the street or anything else. If there were no reasonable suspicion that suggested that he was undergoing illegal activity then there is no cause for investigation.
Had someone called 911 and reported "there is someone walking on the sidewalk with a gun, and they looked into the window of a home" then there would be reasonable suspicion that he was going to perform a crime.
Having said all of that. At some point common sense has to be used, and the student should have just shown his ID and gone on with his day. The officer didn't appear to be a Pr1ck looking to make an arrest or hassle the student in any way.

The kid was being a peepee. I believe I heard the officer say that someone had reported that they had seen a man carrying a gun walking down the street. That is enough for the officer to stop and question the man as to his identity and purpose. The officer was calm and did his job. He understood what the man was doing, but just needed his identity.
I have a feeling this kid will run into some troubles later in life. It never pays to be a peepee with the cops on the street like that. Wait til you get to the courtroom if you want to be that way.

The guy is in the right, but so many of these d-bags walk around looking to get attention from people so they get stopped and try and put the cops in their place and video them. Just carry your gun concealed folks, and nobody will be scared and call the cops. You also won't get stopped by cops just walking down the street. So many folks feel like they have a giant swinging dick if they open carry their pistols.

I for one do not want anyone to know if I am carrying or not. I feel open carrying would make me a target more than anything. The wrong person comes from behind to slam a brick over your head and off he takes your weapon.
I understand the right to open carry but I just think the risk of the attention brought on by yourself outweighs it all.

Exactly right. That kid just wanted a cop to stop him so he could prove his knowledge on the subject and make a cop look bad. He probably has a chip on his shoulder from a previous incident.

Re: Open Carry video. Law Student vs. Cop
I believe the kid was trying to show that the Cops donto care about enforcing the law and they just wanted to enforce what they wanted, be it the law or not. He had broken no law, yet the cop harrassed him, and that's exactly what that was, harrassment. The kid did nothign wrong, yet was "detained" by teh police and repeatedly asked to provide indentification and an explanation, when he was not required by law to do either,,,,but the cop didn't like that and wanted him to just do what i tell you to do.
The cop handeled it well but should not have ever even bothered the kid in the first place. When it comes to MS and you get harrassed by a Cop trying to flex his imiginary muscle yalls tune might change.
Bottom line, the kid broke NO LAW yet was harrassed and detained by the Police.

Re: Open Carry video. Law Student vs. Cop
after talking with our chief, he had no idea the law was changing until we informed him. How are officers made aware of law changes? I guess it is a stupid question, but the officers are uninformed.
There will be a day....
Re: Open Carry video. Law Student vs. Cop
I used to work part time at Bass Pro in Memphis during college. A couple cops also worked part time there. Tennessee has been an open carry State for a long time, if not forever. One cop I worked with swore up and down that you have to carry your pistol concealed in TN. He went on saying "pull out your license. It clearly says CONCEALED carry permit!" I pulled it out and showed him it said HANDGUN carry permit and I had to bring my book from the carry class I took to show him that I could carry openly if I wanted to. It just goes to show that this type of law is not explained well enough to police.tombstone wrote:after talking with our chief, he had no idea the law was changing until we informed him. Re: Open Carry video. Law Student vs. Cop
Unfortunately, you are wrong. If he is in an open carry State then there is no more legal authority for an officer to stop him and ask for Identification as it would be for an officer to stop you from walking down the street and drinking a Pepsi.woody wrote:The kid was being a peepee. That is why I am against Open Carry laws myself. I trust myself with a firearm, but I don't necessarily trust everyone I see with a firearm. Keep this in mind. Lets say you are sitting in a restaurant that hasn't provided a Posted No firearms signs, and a nice clean cut good ol' boy sits down with a semi-auto neatly placed and secured in a side carry holster. You and I would probably not think anything about it. Then all of a sudden you are eating with your family and this guy pictured below walks in with a Glock sticking out of the back of his pocket. How do you feel about that situation? Keep in mind that both men are well within the law to open carry a firearm.
That is why I am a big believer in Conceal Carry and not so big with Open carry.

Re: Open Carry video. Law Student vs. Cop
While I agree the "gentleman" picutred above would cause hesitation and concern if he were to walk in with a glock sticking out of his pants, but it wouldn't really matter if it was open carry or concealled....he still has it. I myself would rather know he had it so i could keep my eye on him rather than not know if he was carrying or not.
Also, the "gentleman" in the photo has more than likely been convicted of several felonies and would not be allowed to "legally" carry a gun, but your point was well made with this guy, he looks like a sure upstanding citizen!
