HR question / dilemma

Postby GET-N-RITE » Mon Mar 25, 2013 3:30 pm

So here is the deal. I / we just passed this weekend and received our 1st ever HR title (we haven’t failed an event yet). I have never had a dog that would pass nor have I ever had a dog as good as the one I have now. I have had a few people tell me that I have a dog that could go to the grand if I keep running her, however I am a little confused as to what I am doing with this dog. She is at a trainer which is expensive but I could never have got her to the level she is at now. The question comes to mind is an HRCH title worth the money to get her there? Is it worth it to maybe try and pursue a title at the Grand if she could even make it? I guess I’m asking is a HRCH title worth in it in the long run if I were to breed her in the future? Does an HRCH titled dog’s pup bring more than a HR title? Does a HRCH title mean a lot more than a HR title? I hunt about 30-40 days a year and she did awesome her first season. She is only 15 months so I am dealing with a young dog, but I just don’t think I have the money to get her to the grand. I never thought I would have this much in her as I do now. I guess I am just trying to justify whether to keep running her or settle for a HR title. I do enjoy running her at the test and it helps me grow as a handler. I wish I had the money just to see how far she could make it in HR events and AKC events because she is really smart and very very fast, and I believe she would actually die for you because she never quits. Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post..

What you want out of your dog is up to you. Most hunters would love to have a HR dog hunt with them. As far as breeding, if you plan on breeding, it will make the diff if you have an HRCH. You can do it yourself if you do not have money to pay a trainer. Find a local club, join and get with some of the old timers to help you learn what you need to do. Also go train with your trainer. Most will teach you right along with the dog. As far as the Grand, it would be nice but you have to pass 3 grands along with having 300 pts so it can get costly.
You might also want to try running AKC if you plan on breeding.

2 grand passes and 300 pts gets you a GRHRCH in front of the name. 3 Master National passes gets you a MNH after the name.

Sorry Karen.

Correct! I'd chase the MNH first.

I wouldn't think about it from monetary reasoning on what you want out of your dog. Just look at it from what will give you the most joy out of having your dog. If it's a HRCH or GRHRCH or any other letters for that matter make you happy go for it, if not take your dog hunting with the HR title and enjoy it. The dog doesn't give a darn what letters are in their name or if they pass or fail a test.

Now that being said if your intention is to breed your dog in the future you really need titles. For instance if I were to buy a dog I wouldn't consider a dog with anything less than an HRCH, and honestly an HRCH/MH is really my minimum so if you really want to breed I would suggest that as your goal as there are so many puppies out there now a day you need titles to help sell your pups.

From a strictly economic point of view, unless you are trying to be a professional or serious hobby breeder, you will never recoup the extra expense of the advanced titles by selling puppies. You will have another $3000-$4000 in training fees to have a pro put a HRCH on the dog, probably $6000 for MH. Do the math on a puppy litter including stud fees and vet fees and it will take 2 litters at 8 puppies for $750 each to break even.
In my guiding experiences with clients who bring their own dogs, believe me that a HR titled dog is better than almost all hunting dogs out there. If your dog is steady, and will do 50 yard doubles and blinds, you are in the top 2 % of all hunting dogs.
If you are happy with your dog now as a hunting buddy, just keep her in shape and enjoy.
