Ole Miss snubbed on NFL Combine

Postby swamprooter » Thu Feb 07, 2013 10:04 am

With all this great news we have received , we may need a downer to get back to reality. Ole Miss has 0 players invited to NFL Combine. Even the Ole Ball Coach pointed out at first of 2012 season we had no talent and he wanted to play us. Maybe we got a coach or two now at University if scraped out 7 wins in 2012. Congrats to MSU and Southern. I think they had 5 players combined invited. Goodluck to Banks and company

To save you time Swamprooter, Alabama has 10 invites with 5 expected to go in the 1st Round. The Process continues.....

Did ole miss have very many seniors to choose from. Seems like their best players are all underclassmen, which is a good thing.

While I doubt that any graduating senior at Ole Miss will be taken in the NFL draft this spring, I do think that big Gilbert Pena and versatile athlete Randal Mackey will each sign a free agent contract with an NFL team and have an opportunity to make an NFL roster.

Pena came on strong at the end of this season. He has good size, strength, maturity, and intelligence. He has only played on the DL for two years. He started out his football career as a TE. Then due to family circumstances and obligations, had to take a break from football. When he returned to football, he had outgrown the TE position. He is a late bloomer who is still learning the position. Some NFL team will give him a chance.

Mackey can do it all as a skill position player --- run, throw, and catch passes. He has good speed and great quickness. He should project as a third-down type of back, who could also double as an emergency backup QB. He will likely get a shot to make some team's roster.

I would also throw in our big TE ( forget his name). He could get an opportunity as well.

I agree with the point that the Rebs did not have a lot of talented upperclassmen on this past season's team. This makes the job that Freeze did even more remarkable, and bodes well for the future.

Having underclassmen invited to the Combine speaks volumes about a program. Not exactly sure, but I believe at least 3 or 4 of Alabama's 10 are Juniors. One of which can be seen in the highlight below. Absolutely scary to see Alabama's current and future backfield - Google the 6'3" 238 lb Derrick Henry from Yulee, FL - set the All-Time Florida and National High School rushing records. Never held below 100 yards in any game beginning his freshman year. Gonna be an absolute beast. One other note, 7 of our heralded freshman actually enrolled in January so they will participate in Spring Practice and be ready to ROLL come next season. Can't wait. Congrats to the Rebs for a great recruiting year as well.

Mackey is an athlete...the Msu players had their invitation before the season even started bc lord knows they didn't earn it during the season...except maybe slay who didn't get nearly enough recognition
