Deer help

Postby jasonmcc » Fri Feb 01, 2013 4:14 pm

I shot a nice 8 point this morning in my plot. When I shot he was roughly 50yds away and he hit the ground. He layed there trying to get up but couldn't move his back legs. He stayed right there for a good minute then finally was able to get up and half way run off. I figured he wouldn't go to far. I gave him 2 hours then went and looked at where he fell. There was blood but not a lot. I then looked where he ran off to and nothing. No blood anywhere other than where he hit the ground. I don't have a dog and looked for 5 hours. Any ideas??? I'm in improve MS and all the pine makes it hard to see blood. Any ideas or tips? I hate to loose a really nice 8

Sounds like you clipped the spine and stunned him.

I learned this the hard way a couple of months ago, if a deer is still moving shoot till you run out of bullets! Similiar situation, thought i hit him good. Hope you find yours though.

Yeah man it's even harder when it's a lesson you've already learned before. Unfortunately when he fell he didn't leave me a great shot and I didn't wanna mess up a mount. Thing is you can't mount something you don't have. Very frustrating and I've beat myself up all day and night for not being ready if he stood up and ran.

'didn't want to mess up a mount'? There in lies the problem, greed gets u every time!

Messed up mount or no deer, possibly wounded and walk off and die a slow death all because of EGO to have a nice mount to brag about? Some sportsman.

Wow thanks "turd-cutter" for your opinion. You should check out websters dictionary for greed and ego because neither work for your arguement. Wanting to shoot a trophy deer that is harder to hunt then a doe doesnt make me egotistical, greedy, or unsportsman. How about this...the only shot I had was a head shot and that's unethical to take. I didnt intentionally not mean to kill the deer. Sound better? You should keep your negative comments to yourself and think before you come on here calling people unsportsman.

Get over on the Bull and contact A-Game, his dog alley will find it if it's dead or wounded to the point it cant out run her.

Tough situation. He will probably live another year though. I shot one a few years ago that had a bullet lodged under his skin, just above the spine. Not much else to do except try and get a second shot next time. How long did he flounce around for?

For about 30-60 seconds. I looked yesterday till lunch then went back till dark. Looked again this morning till lunch. Didn't find any blood and no sign. It makes me sick and even dreamed last night I found him. I really hope he lives and it was only spinal shock.
