those are upper Chesapeake birds. bodies are traditionally turned on a lathe. maker is hard to i.d. since you can throw a rock in that area and hit a carver..........r. madison mitchell and the like are some of the noted carvers with that style that truly would be considered "antique". i doubt those birds are more than 15-20 yrs old though but i think 150 is a fair price.....particularly as a pair.

Here is one ya prob aint never seen....called a roothead...they were used back in the depression days when the decoys were outlawed from the market hunters....they would make these and leave them in the marsh/swamps so they wouldnt get caught with dekes...picked it up in an old store ( thought the store was gona fall off the mountain it was so old and leaning )on the back roads in the mountains of NC back in the mid "90's

rick, as i was reading your post i was finding it interesting as i kept thinking you were going to say a louisiana or mississippi roothead - which i've never heard of but have always imagined folks in those parts using from time to time.........and, then i read where you picked it up in NC, which makes sense as rootheads were used on the East Coast from Maryland down (maybe even more north than that) to the Carolinas...that is VERY COOL decoy.

sam, that merganser decoy of yours kept pinging around in my brain as i kept thinking i had seen it (or one more like it in any case) somewhere before.....i pulled out a few decoy encyclopedia books of mine and search some auction sites until i found what i was looking for.....auction site i scour has one up now that's almost a spitting image except it has a few links of old rusted chain the old timer used for a keel - ingenious IMHO considering it made a bit smaller in storage and created an instant and full proof method of self-righting. this decoy was carved/hunted over around Hooper's Island, maryland which makes you wonder if the carver of your bird spent time over there or vice versa....

in any case, they expect that decoy to go for around 200 or a bit more at auction......

well no new decoys but i did make a couple of stands for the ones i have. i saw one like this in this thread a while back and decided to make some. also made a couple of duck call stands as well. picked up the wood at a flea market/antique store for $7 or so for all 4 pieces.
