How Are River Clubs Doing?

Postby Deltamud77 » Tue Nov 27, 2012 11:13 am

Now in the second season after the Great Flood of 2011, how are the river clubs doing? Are deer numbers and size back to pre-flood levels or are there style lingering effects from the flood?

Thanks

from some of the pictures i'm seeing, the flood was extremely helpful to the deer and their habitat. There have been 3 over 200" killed b/t Tunica and Washington County. Donaldson Point has also killed some great deer this year.

We haven't seen lingering affects for the most part. Lot of good deer being killed.

Coahoma Co clubs are killing some studs. Our quality is way up over last year and ours IMO is below several others that borders us. Key was getting food plots in early. A lot grain grown now besides and inside the levee. peanuts this year should be helpful from oct on forward. our browse line is very low but our mast crop was average.

I think the flood only affected humans and their improvements behind the levee. Even on islands that went totally under, the hunting was above average last year. The game know how to get out, and come back when the water receeds. I have been noticing more does than ususal this year. I think a lot of clubs backed off doe harvest last year, but will need to ramp it up now.

I've seen good movement and healthy deer. A club near me dropped a monster around thanksgiving. The deer had to be 4.5+, so him and his genes made it through the flood.

We have had great year. We have already killed 25 bucks with 6 or 7 over 150 and the rest in the high 130s to low 140s. We also had our first buck killed to go over 180. Like todo said we are seeing a lot more does. Like others said earlier, there have been several really big deer in the 180s and up killed up and down the river. I don't know if the flood helped or just a reduced harvest last year. Our club went really easy on them last year bc we didn't really know the effects of the flood.

I think it helped us. We lost a few in terms of numbers and now the bucks look real healthy and mass is up. We're seeing button bucks absolutely everywhere. We've already killed 160 does this year and they are still everywhere you look. Ought to be some great years ahead if the water will stay out for a while.

Natty, our club is right at 10,000 acres. We usually kill around 50 bucks and 150-200 does, and those numbers really dont put much of a dent in the herd. I would say this is about as good as it has ever been on the MS River. Some true giants have gone down on several clubs. I heard of a slick 8pt that grossed over 170 killed on Caulk island and several other really big deer on other clubs. It seems like a 150 class deer isnt that big of a deal now bc there are so many 160-180 class deer being killed. I guess all of the years of intense management has really paid off on the river.

As rooter and the the others said, it is insane this year. This is one of the best years I can remember already. From caulk island to tunica county, they are hammering 150+ inch deer. I just wish i was in on some of it. It is just wild.

Rooter, my buddy said it is on the edge of blowing up on Burkes. Every doe he saw yesterday had a buck or two behind it. Saw a couple that came off there in the last week or so that were good deer.

FWIW, Yall have killed 160 doe on MHC. I am the only ninja that can go over there and see as many rattlesnakes as I doe deer.
