thank you, you are right in your assessment...I do this stuff for free, I get calls and a few hunting trips (maybe a hat or t-shirt as we've grown)...I don't make a single dime. I worked for a hunting store when I was younger and got into it due to my desire to help a local call maker sale products online and my experience in his market and education with business. I continue b/c I like seeing people use the products, I like going to the shows and talking hunting and hearing the stories, I just enjoy the business......but I don't enjoy defending myself over stupid crap nor am I good at letting stuff roll off my back, bad personality trait combination.deeksdown wrote:learned something about making calls and such a while back.. From a call makers standpoint, does it bother me when people make "custom calls" and stick an echo insert in a turned barrel.. Yes, but on the same sense if thats the STEP it takes a person to get interested in the heritage of call making so be it as long as they realize that the heart of a custom call is in the toneboard. But as far as this thread goes, i think a lot of it has been taken way out of context. i don't think camlock was every claiming to be a custom call maker yet he was just introducing a new product for his store as a cheap and easy manufactured duck call that he tweaked to make it sound better.. and i have no problems or issues with that.. i think if the product sounds good (which im sure it does being that insert) they will sell and be catchy to the eye. and i think thats what he was going after. so camlock go on doing what makes ya happy and money and haters gonna hate no matter what

You have to be a call maker or in the industry to understand this continued representation of someone's calls as their own. I hope he is able to make a few dollars.Blackduck wrote:I don't know why some of y'all are being such hard asses about this. Just not reasonable

So I take it you make duck calls but do so by using things that are completely your own idea. So you do not use reeds or barrels, you have completely original technology that nobody has ever used. If you can take a plain stock gun and put different parts on it and call it custom or take a truck and change parts on it and call it custom then why not duck calls.quit calling wrote:You have to be a call maker or in the industry to understand this continued representation of someone's calls as their own. You don't put a lift kit and a new bumper on an F-250 and then tell people it's not an F-250.mshunter77 wrote:So I take it you make duck calls but do so by using things that are completely your own idea. Re: been working on these since summer...
It is like somebody hunting public land and getting a limit...Then somebody hunting tamed ducks and getting a limit. If they both take a picture with the ducks to the average person it is a limit of ducks in the picture. But to somebody who understands duck hunting it's not even close. That's why people are getting mad. It takes DAYS and countless attempts until you make a good insert and is what "makes" the call your own brand. Or you can just buy somebody else's poly insert for $5 and say you "made" a duck call. Even if it isn't an echo fact is unless the insert was hand made then replicated into polys for these duck calls, well then it is somebody else's work and somebody else's creation.
A man who won't has no advantage over the man who can't.
Re: been working on these since summer...
I dont think anybody is 'mad', the OP asked for opinions and got some negative feedback. If people arent willing to take both pos AND neg feedback then they will probably not last long in any business. He asked for thoughts and got them.

Re: been working on these since summer...
Most of us out here dont care where the barrels, inserts, reeds come from. We are just regular people who duck hunt when we can and most of us blow cheap calls but still manage to have fun and kill a few ducks. I'm still blowing the same calls I bought 20 years ago- a DR-85 and an old Olt D2.
He asked for opinions on the looks of the calls- yes, but what he didn't ask for was to be badgered over where he got his parts or how he went about putting the calls together. You guys are taking yourselves a little too seriously. I realize ya'll are into the whole calling competition/call making thing but good gracious, lighten up a little bit! I doubt very seriously that these calls will put a dent in anybody's sales so I dont think the duck commander is shaking in his boots over the release of this new line
.
You fellas should just shake your head, say "the calls look good' or "the calls look bad" and move on, no need to bash the guy and look down your nose at him. Yall are coming off to most on the board as thinking you are better than everyone else and its making you look bad. I'm sure yall are good guys, prove it and be cool
.
Not sure why I got involved, its none of my business but I just hate to see a guy get beat down for trying to make a legal dollar. Lets stick together and not let silly things like this divide us, we are all duck hunters.

If on the first page he would not have tried to cover up the fact that he did not design the insert it would have stopped right there. Not only did he try to cover it up but also tried to make me look like I didn't know what I was talkin about. 100% backwards I think was the term. Be upfront and honest and none of this would have gone down. Plenty of other guys selling calls that will tell you the inserts are not theirs, nothing wrong with that.
I even apologized, Said I was sorry I was looking at it on phone. Then he lied again saying the insert is his and that he was just pointing out my assumptions were wrong.
I won't be lied to then be called a lie and just let it slide. Sorry I'm a douche bag that calls it like he sees it.

Re: been working on these since summer...
I agree with Timberjack......Lots of you are too serious about stupid crap that nobody cares about. The guy is a long time contributor to the site with a clean rep and probably didn't intentionally lie to anybody. You guys really need to lighten up and find something to be passionate about that could make a difference instead of some stupid call insert.

I agree. Its kind of like bows...I mean how much "new" technology can you have?
Re: been working on these since summer...
you assumed I am trying to be something I am not, which is why I said your assumption was 100% backward..."barrell builder" that you put in quotations like that is a degrading remark in your world??? You never asked a dang thing, you made a smart ass self righteous remark about Rick Dunn and barrell builders cause you notice what you believed to be a factory poly insert and expected everbody to think you were the cool guy that knows his $#!+ about duck calls and duck hunting calling out the guy on the internet...now you wanna talk like the innocent consumer that was lied to...you knew your intentions and so did I and instead of bantering I should've just ignored you or said yeah I worked off a factory tune insert to get what I wanted so you'd shut up but I don't like self righteous douche bags and I don't shut up real easy...DUCK-HUNT wrote: If on the first page he would not have tried to cover up the fact that he did not design the insert it would have stopped right there. and for the record, in ALL of this...I never have tried to sale anything to anybody...I presented a picture of an idea I began working on in summer asked for feedback on how they looked...didn't ask for half this $#!+.
Re: been working on these since summer...
To my knowledge Duck-Hunt has been a long time member with a clean rep, so based on your reasoning he has every right to speak his mind. 'Strawman' argument there. If these calls are at a show, someone is going to ask the question that Duck-Hunt asked. OP will catch some flack, so why not start here and be honest with him? he asked how they looked and they look like an Echo insert, that was the feedback.
Some of you guys need to find something else to be passionate about that matters other than belittling guys who are passionate about call inserts.
