Re: Topic De Jour: Seccession
Fire plug.
I would agree.
What the GOP will need to do is to take a very social moderate but fiscally conservative position. People understand the need to control debt and the economy. But what Obama did really well was to divide all of those by special interest. He will take away your right to an abortion, too do drugs, too be Gay, etc. There are just too many people who will vote on a single issue because all they understand is that issue. I would also agree on leaving the social stuff to the states.
If I recall we fought a pretty bloody war over wanting the states to decide that kind of stuff and I think the south was in the states’ rights camp.
If the GPO would get out of the social issues and focus on the economy and the finances of the government then they would be unbeatable.

I didn't say that... I just said let the states decide what they want. Obviously what we want here in MS is different than what they want in New York. Personally, if 2 dudes want a piece of paper saying they are "married" and can inherit each other's chit I could care less. If MS wants to ban gay marraige and NY wants to make it legal, let all the gay people move to NY or CA or wherever. I know where I stand and what I think is right, but that doesn't give the federal gov't the right to tell someone else to do it my way. Conservatives are a funny bunch... we're all for federal gov't if they want to do it OUR way, but God forbid someone wants to do it another way... then we all scream THE GOV'T CAN'T TELL ME WHAT THE HELL TO DO!!! Kinda like the pot callin' the kettle black ain't it. The bottom line is there are 100 different views on all these social issues and the Republicans have narrowed themselves down to just ONE view on all of them. There's no way they'll win in today's world. Some of the far right will scream and holler about "it's not right" right up until the minute all of these social issues are shoved down our throat on a federal level because that's what the dems want and they'll win until we change with the times.

+1. My only hope is that things don't go to far before we can regain power. A few supremes and major changes in how the rules work in DC will be exceptionally hard to overcome. A movement back towards our founding with the federal government doing what they are supposed to doing and the states doing everything else will allow like you said for people to make choices. Going forward we will see what the government does. If things stay the same in DC or get worse we are going to be in big trouble. If the Dems back off a bit and don't try more big fundamental changes I'd say there is some hope.Chuckle12 wrote:I think everyone is way over thinking the "we will never see another republican president" thing. If we are to ever see a republican win....he or she will have to b Hispanic or black. Mathematically impossible to win with another white male. I am sure y'all saw the breakdown and the way they are multiplying and th fact that older white baby boomers are dying off doesn't bode well.

Wow! Never would have thought some of those states would be on the list.

It would be total and complete economic ruin if the state succeded. Mississippi gets millions and millions of dollars from the goverment now and is still broke. We would be living in a third world country without that federal money, period. I didnt vote for Barry but i think we gotta come together some how, some way at this point.

I don't think these requests to leave the Union have come from any of the elected officers of these states. Anyone can start a petition and I'm sure this was
a organized effort by extremist types and will blow over soon. News isn't reporting it or at least the MSM isn't and they won't.
And your last sentence won't happen either. Gonna be another 4 years of economic dispare, finger pointing and blame gaming. Companies are already
laying off workers to prepare for Obamacare and the Dems are blaming the buisness owners for making business decisions to salvage their companies.
If the officials of these states draft letters to leave the union, then I will take it seriously. If Ms did leave, we would have to take control of our own schools,
reform the welfare rolls and get them out of the hands of the Dems and unions. A lot of things would have to change and they would have to change from
day one of leaving the US. Our state taxes would surely go up because they would have too. Hopefully our Republican controlled state gov. can start to get
some of these things in motion so it won't hurt so bad when/if we had to leave the Union again.
I edit this to say that I've seen on the White House web page that Ms now has almost 5000 signatures on a petition that requires 20k. 25% of the way there on the first day and it has until Dec. to have them completed. Looks like Ms may be on it's way.
How do you like your Hope and Change?
