I worked in Costa Rica and traveled back and forth for almost 6 years. Yes it is a great place as well. Prices of real estate has really gone up but what I have heard lately there are some good deals. However now the Chinese is buying up land left and right down there so it should be going up soon again. I have a friend that works there now that just moved from China that is a US citizen and loves it. It is more populated than NZ. I like the quietness in NZ better. I could drive miles and miles and never see a soul.

However you will still have to pay tax if you make more than 92K a year as you are only allowed up to 92K tax free even if you are there full time. You have to be out of the country for 330 days a year total to take advantage of this tax break. If you are less it is pro rated. So yes they still tax you if you live outside the US.

You have to renounce your citizenship in order to stop paying taxes. This is what a lot of the tech guys did when Facebook went public. So now the money they made is in another country. Our laws are killing us here in the US or should I say the newly elected pres is doing it to us. Don't get us started on this...

The casino is in San Jose, but they have several condos in Los Suenos that we could stay in for free, and a couple 50+ foot Hatteras' (fishing down there is phenomenal). No US taxes on income as long as we EACH make less than 92K. 330 days is correct, but that leaves enough days to visit for big holidays and several weekends of duck season. They might actually move the airplane down there semi-permanently, and we're actually looking into whether or not flying principles into the US for half day business mtgs would count as days "in country"
It's very, very sad that I would even consider this, but right now it truly does seem like a viable option.
