Hooked on Quack! w/pics

Postby Anatidae » Thu Oct 25, 2012 10:38 am

Harvest went well this year so our SK host has been able to hunt with us a few days. He's made about 5 hunts with us and 3 of those have been 'limit' hunts for ducks.

We hunted peas the first hunt and the birds didn't really work as well because it's hard to hide in peas. So, he ordered a jacket and bibs in 'Duck Blind' from Cabela's so he'd blend-in better without a ground blind.

So, this morning we hunted a barley field with around 5cm of snow on it........they just flogged us! We each took turns shooting and picking-out greenheads - and keeping track of what we killed and where it fell. BJ brought'em all back to Anne's blind and she distributed them to each shooter.

We actually had to pass-up several groups of pintails and wigeon to hold-out for greenheads.

As result (and after we picked-up) before we put them all in the 'photo' pose, we all checked our birds for bands. Our host hollered when he came across one of his birds that was banded.

We're going after honks and ducks in the morning. Not many folks want to get out in the blowing snow to do this, but he's 'hooked', for sure!

I'll try to get some more photos uploaded and posted in between hunts.

The banded duck was banded 140 miles West of our location on 8/12/2010.

As you wish.......

This was the body of ducks........we hunted in the field just beyond the lake in this photo, about 1/4 mile from the lake. Guns and shots were pointing away from the lake. This is the view after we left the field.

A lot of the birds that were on this lake yesterday were out feeding at the time. We followed some of them to the field I susupected they went to.........and the one we will hunt tomorrow. We have a choice of barley stubble or peas.........probably 800-1200 honkers in each one and at least 3-4000 ducks. Snow makes'em feed all day and congregate like this. There's another field that had around 5-6000 snows and I didn't see how many ducks. One of the best years we've had so far (hunting conditions and abundance of birds).

Migration update: They are still plentiful in mid-lat SK with light snow cover and temps in the 30's. Weekend forecast is to get to -12C Friday and Saturday. I doubt that will freeze everything up - and these birds should remain here and continue to get fat and happy.

And a band to boot! Great story for sure, glad the ole boy has come over to our side!
I am interested in purchasing duck calls that were made by Mike McLemore. I am a family member and they have a sentimental value.

Here's another shot - post-hunt......

Image

Photobucket changed their website up a bit and I'm having trouble re-sizing these photos so you can tell something from them. When I get more time, I'll experiement a little more.

The snow is still coming down........gotta go set the ground blinds out in it to make sure we blend-in for the honkers tomorrow. They are a little more particular about their surroundings than ducks are. It is just cold enough to tighten the ground up so we can drive the big trailer in the field........not taking any chances in the morning.........putting-out 10 dozen honker and 8 dozen duck shells.

Are you using the new barley field greaters with fully fledged feather detail in the walking uptight semi-hungry feeder pose?

Not quite - didn't need any confidence decoys on this hunt - we just used 8 dozen G&H field mallard shells on my homemade motion stakes in the "God is great, God is good - let us thank Him for this food" pose.
