Ask DS Caliber
Re: Ask DS Caliber
I bought an Encore Pro Hunter this year with a thumb hole synthetic stock. Kicked like an SOB getting the scope on. Bought an aftermarket laminated thumb hole stock and the extra weight really helped knock the recoil out. Don't know it it was the weight are the fact the recoil was being dissipated through a solid versus hollow medium or what but it's much better. Plus I like how it looks.

I have the 45-70 and 444 in the handi rifle and a 35 wheelen in a pro hunter and I have killed deer with them all. I use my 35 pretty much all season long and never use the other primitive guns anymore. Any will do and recoil is not much difference to me. I use the 180 grain barnes triple shocks and am very happy with this set up. 300 yard gun all day.

The drop of the .444 is around 6" at 200 yards. I would shoot 200 yards at a standing target with a steady rest and feel good about hitting it. Beyond 200ish I would probably need a more powerfull scope. I have yet to take a shot over 125 yards...no trailing...just a dead deer. The .444 is a mean round that makes a big hole, Ive never shot the 35

There will be a day....
Re: Ask DS Caliber
35 Whelen in 30-06 necked up to 35 caliber.. I sold it and went with the 358 Win.. It is the 308 Necked up to 35 caliber.. Less recoil and now Hornady is making factory loads for it as well as Double Tap..

exactly. "primitive" season is becoming less and less primitive to the point of why even have such a season.

Why even have a primitive season? I have often wondered what the purpose of the season is if you can use centerfire cartridges. Why not just do away with it and hunt the weapon of your choice. Might as well take my 7mm-08 all the time, its just as primitive as the other weapons mentioned. food for thought.

Yeah it is crazy what you can use now for primitive season. I really don't see the point. The only drawback to these guns is that they are single shot but how often do you have to shoot at a deer twice.Lazy Drake wrote:MudHog wrote:medic11 wrote:+1 for the 444, takes the primitive out of it.

I really like my 45-70, folks say it kicks like a mule but it really doesnt. Now that said I am thinking about picking up a 35wheelen this year to add to my aresenal, I just like that caliber. If I had to pick one or the other it would prob. be the 35

I have both and its always a hard decision on which to hunt with. I just love the amount of damage the 45/70 can do. I hunt with it 80% of the time.
