Jury Verdict in on Rebs

Postby Po Monkey Lounger » Mon Sep 17, 2012 7:39 am

After two wins over teams that all (after the fact) thought that Ole Miss should beat, the consensus was that the jury was still out regarding the 2012 Rebels. I agreed, and after a 10 hour game day experience with the visiting Longhorns of Texas, I am ready to announce my verdict.

The Rebels were simply outmatched against Texas --- just not big enough, strong enough , or fast enough at this time. But, the Rebels played hard and never quit, fighting all the way to the final horn. Had everything gone the Rebs' way ( no early pick six, no 3 interceptions, no 2 called back touchdowns, etc), the game would have been much closer for a longer time, but Texas was still a 21+ point better team than the Rebels. As the game wore on deeper into the second half, the superior offensive talent, depth, and speed of Texas was simply too much for the Reb defense to handle.

The final score, 66-31, was this lopsided not due to Texas "running up the score " as a few Rebels have suggested, but due to the fact that this Rebel team just would not concede defeat. The Rebs showed enough quick strike firepower for Mack Brown to not feel comfortable with even a 3 score lead. So, wisely, Texas played their starters pretty much till the end of the game.

Texas was very sharp offensively for the entire game. Granted, there were a few plays where the Rebs' inexperience or lack of talent made Texas look better than they were, but for the most part Texas was on top of its game. Texas' 3 big and fast running backs pounded the middle of our defense, setting up a very efficient passing game that generated a lot of big plays.

Final verdict: The Rebs weren't yet ready to handle a team like Texas. But, here is the good news for Rebel fans. There are only 2 other teams on our schedule with Texas-like talent --- Alabama and LSU. We'll see Alabama on the road in a couple of weeks, with LSU near the end of the season. The Rebs can compete well with the rest of our SEC schedule. I still think this Reb team has a reasonable chance to win 6 games this season.

Our OL needs to continue to get better. Although a couple of the sacks of Wallace were coverage sacks, the others were due to defenders getting into the backfield too quickly. And Bo Wallace needs to work on handling that type of pressure better ---- primarily by getting rid of the ball instead of taking a sack. Bo has a tendency to try to scramble out of trouble. Against teams with the speed of Texas, that won't work. And he tried to force some passes into tight coverage, which resulted in 2 of the 3 interceptions. Against the speed of the Texas DBs, the window of a receiver being open will be much narrower.

I'm not sure of what our defense can do to improve much this season, other than to work on better tackling and the DBs on better ball awareness when the ball is in the air. Many of our defensive deficiencies can only be cured with more experience and bigger, stronger, faster players. The young players need more development and we need to recruit well on the defensive side of the ball. There are no quick fixes. Our D played hard and gave great effort for 4 quarters. It just wasn't near enough against a team like Texas.

It's on to New Orleans and Tulane (Twolane  ). Should be a fun trip and a good opportunity for the Rebs to regroup and get better.

Agreed, I thought Old Miss looked good.

As odd as this sounds after giving up 66 points at home to a team that is not necessarily elite, I was pleasantly surprised by the Rebels. As stated above, if nothing else, they did not quit. Not quitting will carry you pretty far in college football. Not quitting and having elite talent will carry you to the top of the SEC.

Texas obviously had better athletes at every position. I am not sure that Freeze fielded a player that would have started for Texas outside of Moncrief (who is beast by the way). That being said, if you are using this game as an early litmus test for the Freeze tenure, I think Rebel Black Bear fans should rest easy knowing that he has changed the culture within the team fairly quickly away from folding like a cheap tent when a light wind blows.

Going forward, for sustained success, since one major component seems to be under control (attitude) coupled with x's and o's, the next thing is amassing talent. Can Freeze get the horses to run the race? I don't think we will know that until the recruiting class of 2014 is signed and in the barn. Recruiting is a three or four year deal now. Kids start to get attention and national rating as freshman. Freeze, by virture of just getting the job and by virtue of inheriting a grease fire, is behind other SEC schools in the area through no fault of his own in recruiting.

If he can turn that around, I think Freeze can start to have the kind of success that Ole Miss is capable of, which in my opinion, is similar to what South Carolina is now experiencing.

If it is proper to say congrats after a 5 touchdown home defeat...then I raise my glass to you...Rebel Black Bears...I honestly think you have yourselves a pretty good coach that will bring success to Oxford in the near future.

By the way, I honestly think Ole Miss has a chance at winning 7 games this season....the two in the bag + Tulane, Arky, Auburn, Vandy, and yes, State.

There is not a better place to go regroup and get a W against Tulane than a trip to NOLA.

Every SEC team should schedule one of those at least every 3 years.

Any Ole Miss fan that believes Ole Miss wins over 4 games this season is delusional.

Tulane, Vandy, and Auburn are definetly three winnable games now. Obviously Tulane was from the start. Vandy has not been as good as I though they would be and we all know about Auburn. So I think the ceiling for the Rebels is 5 wins which I did not think was possible at the start of the season but as mentioned before two teams are not as good as I thought they would be. I do like the fact that thy did not quit in this game, saw that a lot last year. Wallace has potential to be a Good QB but that defense is not going to win any games for them.

you are more hopeful than we are delusional...I think we win 5 and with a big time break or two somewhere possibly 6 (UCA, UTEP, Tulane, and two of either Auburn, Ark, Vandy, MSU)...you think that prediction is delusional based on what we've seen for 3 weeks around these teams listed?

Po Monk spot on...Texas backfield was way too strong. ..#24 could knock down the Johnny Vaught bronze.... +100 on Rebs not quiting.....Not much talent and slim depth...we will get some more lopsided defeats. Texas has a great fan base. Enjoyed their crowd. Their football team just played ball....no ninja crap....mouthing.....they just hit us under the chin then got back in the huddle...i like that...proof is in the action not reaction...thats how i like the game played... Hopefully the Rebs are making a turn this year, but at the moment we just have our blinker on

Swamprooter, I looked for you in front of Hume in the Circle for a good 30 minutes between 3:45 and 4:15. Couldn't find you. Almost couldn't find my way back to my own tailgate. I have never seen the Grove that crowded in my lifetime. I think every Texas fan that made the trip came to the Grove. Many just wandered around from tent to tent asking for food/beverage and were accommodated. Our group fed at least 15-20 Texas fans. We had an additional 8 Texas fans who were family members of some of our tailgating group, who stayed with us all day until game time. I needed a GPS device to find my way around.

Between the Ole Miss girls and visiting Texas girls, there was enough eye candy to cause blindness. Lord have mercy.

I was in the Grove so long that I was on my second "drunk" right before gametime, and abstained the rest of the evening. I'm only good for about one like that during a season.

They hit the beef tender and BLT shrimp dip hard.........

The Streaker ran to the SEC logo on the field and spanked his booty............Mike Slive has already suspended him from the next 3 SEC games for illegal conduct

Can Freeze get the horses to run the race? I don't think we will know that until the recruiting class of 2014 is signed and in the barn. Recruiting is a three or four year deal now. Freeze, by virture of just getting the job and by virtue of inheriting a grease fire, is behind other SEC schools in the area through no fault of his own in recruiting.

I agree with that. But, with regard to attitude, there will be more adversity to overcome during this season. So, the jury will still be out with regard to this team's mental toughness until the season has ended. I am betting that they won't quit and will keep fighting until the season is over.

With regard to the future of our defense, I really like the following young players:

C.J. Johnson. He is a true sophomore, who played his freshman season under Nutt last year at LB. He is already a defensive leader this season --- a QB on the field. In order to get more pressure on opposing QBs and aid in run support, Johnson is playing this season at DE. Although he is a bit undersized for an SEC DE, he is holding his own and making plays all over the field. Eventually, when defensive team depth at DE permits, I think he will be moved back to his natural position at LB. Against a big OL like Texas, he was a bit undersized at DE.

Channing Ward: He is a true freshman who is behind a bit due to being held out of fall camp until he was cleared by the NCAA just a week or so before our season opener. But he came in as one of the best physical specimens out of all the freshmen, and he is making up ground very fast. He was all over the field against Texas, and damned near ran down from behind Texas' Olympic track star on a TD run, showing great speed for a big man. Ward is the right size with the right talent to be a future star at DE for the Rebels. He just needs playing time and experience. He will get it this season. We need one or two more like Ward so that Johnson (above) can move back to LB.

Isacc Gross: Another true freshman, this kid has a constant motor and is very fast off the ball ---the fastest on our D. He plays on the DL at noseguard and weighs approx 260. He is undersized for a noseguard, but makes up for his lack of size with great explosiveness. It will be interesting to see how he develops. If he can add another 20+ pounds of good weight and keep his speed and explosiveness, he will be hard to handle and an SEC star on the DL at noseguard. If he stays the same size, then he has the speed to play DE and that might be a good position swich for him and the Rebel D to add some more beef at DE. I wish he could play DE this season. But, the depth/talent situation along the interior of the DL dictates him playing where he is currently playing.

Trae Elston. Trae is a true freshman who gained a bit of notoriety last week with that great, legal hit on the UTEP receiver. But, Slive suspended him for the hit; thus, Trae could not play against Texas. Through the first two games, Trae was coming on strong at safety. He makes plays all over the field, and will knock an opponent's dick in the dirt. He's tough. He is the type of player we need in the secondary. As Trae comes on this season (and hopefully, his development will not be deterred by the bad decision made by Slive), this might allow us to switch Sawyer back to cornerback, which is his natural position. His one game suspension is over, and I am sure he will be ready to go against "Twolane".

Denzel Nekemdiche. Denzel is a redshirt freshman playing at LB for the Rebels this season. He is a bit undersized for a LB (even an outside LB), but he has an active motor and makes plays all over the field. He has been referred to by the coaching staff as our Tasmanian Devil. He is another young defensive players whose future will be interesting to watch. He may stay at LB, or could be moved to one of the safety positions, depending upon his physical development. As he gets more experience, he will be become a very good defensive player for the Rebels at either LB or saftety. Although his younger brother, who is considered the number one recruit in the nation this year, gets more attention, I think Denzel may turn out to be just as big of a star player before his college days are over.

While there are other frosh and sophomores making an impact for the Rebels, these 5 are the ones who, IMO, will form a solid nucleus to build our defense around over the next two to three years. For our defense, we need some more corners, tackles, and linebackers. Hugh has to go out and get them. In the meantime, I am going to enjoy watching these young Rebels get better and mature.

You might want to take off those Maroon and White glasses Jeff. The Black Bears played a good ballgame against a heck of an opponent. MSU has beaten Jackson State, a very poor performing Auburn team, and should have gotten beaten by Troy. At this point I would call the OM/MSU game a even game.

For opposing teams Freeze has created the worst kind of opponent; the kind of opponent that plays as a team and believes they can win. The team concept and belief in winning will get them one victory this year that no one was counting on.

Ole Miss needs to place a major emphasis on interior defensive lineman and the offensive line as whole. If you look at the sustained success of LSU and Bama through the years, one thing is always constant...dominate lines...especially defensive lines. You cannot win in the SEC without a dominate to near dominate d-line...it is not possible.

Ole Miss needs to recruit western TN and North Louisiana and New Orleans hard. There are stud defensive lineman that don't get LSU schollies in LA that Ole Miss could go after.
