Nitro has been making duck loads for a while. They have them in "mega weight" now.

Y'all my just be prankin'.......but, a word to the wise......

Remington offers a variety of shotshell loadings that are termed 'Nitro'..........most of them contain lead shot.

If it doesn't say Nitro-Steel or if there is not some visible printed reference to 'non-toxic' loads ON THE CARTON - chances are, it contains lead shot.

It amazes me to be in an area specifically designated for waterfowl hunting and invariably find Remington 'Nitro' hulls floating around.......and they are LEAD shot loads.

That epitomizes ignorance and also could cost someone a large federal citation.

So I suggest looking at the product very closely to make sure it is Steel or No-Tox.

Greenwood Wal-Mart sold these in the steel shot section years ago.

Like Anatidae said.....work 'em in close, or let 'em go. Ideally the shooting should be the easy part....usually a "chip-shot" means you've done your job well. Never been a great shot....but when they get in my wheelhouse I don't miss many. It's all about knowing when to shoot....and when not to shoot.

Thanks, Josh - just wanted to make the distinction.

Thanks for the photo, Jeff. Helps clarify things - and maybe will keep someone from getting a ticket.........clearly a buffered lead load.

I'm with you dhunter2. Although I DO understand how frustrated folks get on slow days or during slow seasons and want to extend their range or firepower. 'Gotta know your limitations and shoot within them. There are some good long-range shots (consistent) on this board.......I'm not one of'em with steel loads. I just want'em working as close as I can get'em - then, like you say, then it's just a matter of pulling the trigger. Game won when you get'em where you like'em. Then you can choose to kill'em or not.

If it hadn't been for Jason @ Lakeway telling me later that week what they actually were ......it could've gotten real ugly.

Well, scratch nitro for duck. $3.50 per shell? I'll pay the $5 per for turkey, but not for ducks. Whoa!

Thats about right, not cheap or sure. BUT, they are right in line with the big boys HTL.

I went from shooting 10 ga steel to 3 inch HTL and my kill % went up. Shoot less, tote less, kill a few more, cost pretty close to the same.

+1 Found some Remington Wingmaster HD being closed out....went from 3 1/2 #2s to 3 inch and 2 3/4.....4s and 6s.......I'll never shoot steel again if the HTL loads are still around..JMO

For the last two years I have been lucky enough to make a trip with work where the shells are provided and we were given hevi metal. I am planning on trying a case this year. That stuff just seemed to kill better or I shot better one?!?!? If I don't shoot those I will be sticking with the tried and true Winchester supremes that I have used for several years now!

what are other's experience with the hevi metal? I got a case on sale from MPW and will be trying it out this year. I consider myself a good shot but I have noticed differences in shells now that I am actually taking note.

i bought one box of hevi metal last year 3in number 3's; last year i mainly shot fed speed shok number 2's; i noticed a big difference in shooting hevi metal; more clean kills than normal; actually killed a few ducks that i would consider on the edge of my shooting distance; and compared to the normal steel shot loads i was shooting this stuff had more considerable recoil. but i really liked it. i would buy again. it did well for me.

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day
and THAT is a duck hunt.
