I know!!! Can you imagine the heat/humidity combination in the everglades in July???
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

On one of the Dr Deer shows they have been helping a large ranch down there. They have said a couple of times that their rut runs from July to October. They never gave a reason for it.

Re: why not open archery in Sept ?
The MDWFP is pushing reduction of does. Does would prolly be off limits during a September season due to fawning issues. Therefore they probably dont see much of a biological need to expand the season and there aren't that many bowhunters pushing it (or at least they aren't very vocal). No squeeky wheel, no grease.
Re: why not open archery in Sept ?
I'd prefer extending it thru February...the Mose boring month of the year

H3LL YES!!! I'm definitely down with that. I hate February. My favorite time of year has just ended and nothing to do until "long-beard" season opens up.

MDWFP has had several lobbyist trying to push for a longer season. The biggest lobbyers to extend the season are private insurance companies. Mississippi has the second highest rate of vehicle accidents and personal injuries related to traffic accidents caused by deer.
They lobbied vigorously to extend the season but no one would agree, so they ushered in the primitive weapon deal with 45-70's and 35 Whelens thinking harvest numbers would go up but they haven't. They need to run it from September to February to lower the numbers some then re-visit the season length and harvest numbers again.

Re: why not open archery in Sept ?
last thing I want to do is the kill any of our wildlife for the sake of a insurance company....sorry, but the number of dollars they pay out due to auto accident with deer can't possibly approach the number of dollars they bring in from people that never hit a deer in the life of their policy....therefore, I don't want our hunting resources being governed on insurance behalf...robby2002 wrote:MDWFP has had several lobbyist trying to push for a longer season. Re: why not open archery in Sept ?
The numbers will never come down till the majority of people quit horn hunting and start killing does, doesn't matter how long the season is. It will just give someone two more weeks to look at does and small bucks. I do it myself, sit there and watch fifteen or so deer in one sitting waitng on the "big one" to come out. The only way to keep this large of a population to just be stable is to start shooting more does. New rule for our small neck of the woods.... shoot a doe then a buck, and another doe before another buck. Not saying this is a good system for everyone, manage to your situation, but a longer season wont help a thing when it comes to deer numbers.
